A buddy of mine just picked up an old 318 and a freeze plug blew out of it...in the process the block cracked in a few places around the hole. no parts of it are missing, but can the block be welded??? thanks in advance.

Blocks CAN be welded, but I'm not really sure you want to in this case. If you weld, it needs to be preheated and you use a high nickle rod. You can also braze, and this may be a better choice since you're not dealing with high temps and you're basically just trying to keep the water off the ground. If it were mine, I'd try JB Weld first.

For cracks around a freeze plug, you can use a "sandwitch plug" to repair the area. Look at a temporary rubber expanding freeze plug or a freeze plug mounted block heater to get the idea.

Basically you have a plate on the front and backside (waterjacket side)and a bolt running through the middle to hold it all together.
Clean the area (bothe sides) and use some good sealer or JB weld, this design will hold in the plug and should stop the leaks.
