Can anyone tell me if the driveshaft from a 7 1/4 rear end will work when swapping to an 8 1/4? Are the universals different on the rears making it necessary to also switch the driveshafts as well? I am planning a future swap and want to know what all is involved so I get the correct parts. The car is a '70 Swinger, slant w/ 904.

The drive shaft will need to be shortened for the 8 1/4" axle. Measure the centerline of the axle to the centerline of the universal joint on the yoke the difference between the measurement on the two axles will be the amount the drive shaft needs to be shortened. The universals them selves should be OK. Even if the 8 1/4 has the bigger size universal you can get a conversion joint that will allow them to be mated.

The other option is to get the drive shaft from another Swinger that came with an 8 1/4.
