HI I'M A NEW GUY

I'M 19 AND I JUST BOUGHT A 69' DODGE DART SPECIAL/CUSTOM.
I PLAN TO RESTORE IT AND I FIGURED I WOULD START WITH THE TRANNY, SINCE IT JUST WENT OUT ON ME AND ITS THE ONLY THING CAUSING IT TO BE NON-DRIVABLE. NOW THIS IS WHERE I WAS HOPING SOMEONE COULD HELP ME OUT.

1. I KNOW IT'S AN AUTOMATIC WITH A COLUMN SHIFTER, BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT TYPE OF TRANNY IT IS?

2. IF REVERSE IS COMPLETELY GONE BUT IT WILL STILL MOVE FORWARD IS IT REBUILBABLE AND IS IT WORTH IT?

3. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS FOR A SWAP?

ANY INFORMATION IS MUCH APPRECIATED.

Your tranny is a A904 and is completly rebuildable, the 904 and its heavier duty brother the 727 are among the best transmissions ever designed and properly rebuilt will provide years of trouble free service. No other trans come close to its reliabilty. My advice rebuild and enjoy and forget about the swap.

Swapping in a working used 904 is another option.
Any auto trans from a 904 SL6 car, 1968 and up will swap-in, even into the late 70's and 80's.
Fact is that the later 904 autos had lock-up converters and a lower first gear ratio which can be useful.

THANKS FOR ALL THE INFO GUYS. ITS HELPING ME OUT ALOT.

IV'E STARTED LOOKING FOR REBUILD KITS FOR MY TRANNY BUT ALL I CAN FIND IS EXPENSIVE KITS FOR THE 727. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET A KIT FOR THE 904 OR EVEN SEPARATE PARTS, AT A REASONABLE PRICE?

most of the "pro" type auto parts stores like napa and car qweef should be able to help you out (try the older stores.) if not, call around to any transmission shop. a good rebuild kit probably runs around 50-100 bucks with all the clutches and steels. you may have some luck doing a websearch. just be sure to get a complete kit as the "paper and seal" kits usually leave out a lot of wear items.
