It came off of a running car ('72) belonging to the mechanic that worked on it before I got it. He knows now , at least, that the rebuilt store carbs are junk. That's about all I know about it. My carb experience is mostly with Dellortos and solex/bocar VW stuff. This one is a little different. I haven't tried any internal changes yet. I'm not getting any intake backfires like I'd see sometimes when I had a lean condition on my bug but I understand a lack of power or bucking can also indicate leanness. i've never had to do fload adjustments. I just got done doing a steering coupler and need to get the tranny mount done. I was hoping it would be getting painted by now but no call from the body guy yet, so I might as well do something to it. I've got the assembly diagram printed off and some of the indicated info from the other threads. I had a real bad off idle stall issue that is all but gone now that I'm getting good timing advance. It got better when I backed the mix screw leaner too. So you're saying the float may be too high and not giving enough fuel?

The float may be soaked with fuel, too heavy, and causing the carb to run rich. It sounds like the best thing you can do as a next step is a careful disassembly and inspection of the carburetor to see what kind of shape it's in, internally.

Floats run about $10.00 out here at Joe's Carb Shop in Lynnwood, Wa. See address under the "The Slanted Network" in the Forum Index.
Just picked up a spare two weeks ago.

Once you open it up find out what size the jet is too! Let us know, the number is stamped on the side of the jet.

Take your "T" and move it over to the choke pull off. Then tell us what kind of vacuum your getting at idle, and at cruise.

Main jet says 55 on it. Everything looked very clean in there except I didn't see a spring pushing up on the float like in the pictures Vacuum from the choke was essentially the same as ported. I get 11.5-12 at idle, 7 highway and 0-5 for pulling. It will ping at 65 at any decent size hill (vacuum falls to 5 and under), so I may have a bit too much timing too.

Good! leave the vacuum gauge plugged in at that point. That tells us allot about what is going on.

Idle should be 18" or higher out of gear, in gear should be 16" or higher. Those low readings tell us the engine is pretty worn out (low compression) or you have some pretty big vacuum leaks, or the valves are pretty carboned up and not sealing or the cam is worn out. You may want to do a compression test on each cylinder. Do a check dry, then squirt 3 or 4 squirts of oil in the spark plug hole and record the difference wet vs dry. That will tell you the condition of the rings. If there is a a big change 20 pounds or more the rings are not sealing to well.

Does it have allot of lifter noise? or is it super quiet...?

The #55 jet is way too lean for a truck, that is why your in the power valve is coming on and staying on at freeway speeds and that is why your mileage is so bad. I don't even like running a #55 in my car!

You should try and find the float spring.

I am not sure if you are still running the lean burn computer system or not. It would be nice to have a stock ECU to go with your new distributor.
I would install a #60 jet and set the initial timing at 10 degrees and do some more street tests capturing the new vacuum settings.

After doing the compression tests, changing to a #60 jet and 10 degrees timing, it will be interesting to see the new vacuum readings.

It doesn't smoke or use oil. Its always, since new, had a periodic bad lifter tap that comes and goes. I'll give it a good dose of sea foam top end cleaner and check the compression too. It could have washed the cylinders from being run cold and way rich for a time. Was thinking it could be a combo of float and air leak.

A little Rislone will help that lifter.

Eureka! Big gasket under the carb is bad as well as a leak in the PCV hose. I'm up to 13 at idle. Need to find a suitable carb gasket now. Float spring and a #60 main on the way too.

New gasket, #60 main, float spring installed. Turns out I had a broken engine and tranny mount too. Runs much smoother and quieter. Blowby is not bad either I noticed when I disconnected PCV. Can't say I notice much of a difference with the bigger jet though. I'm at 14 inches of vacuum now at idle in park. I'm not sure it going to get much better than that. Everything except the brake booster and choke is disconnected. I can't find the seafoam top engine cleaner in a spray like I used to. They only have the liquid stuff around hear.

What's your elevation? If you're within a few hundred feet of sea level, 14" is about 6" less than you're looking for...that would make it time to start checking for timing chain stretch and other mechanical wear issues.

I'm at 1100 ft. I got to drive a little more yesterday and I was able to pull a hill and stay in 3rd instead of having to kick down, so maybe there is more torque there. I'm going to try another vacuum gauge as well. I used to be able to feel the overdrive kick, but not anymore. I'd like to explore that as well at some later date.

At 1100 feet you should be looking for 19 rather than 20 inches of vacuum.

...what overdrive, BTW?

This may be a dumb question, but is there a way to tell if the cam is worn without taking it out? I found the thread in the tranny forum about a wire off of the starter relay to apply the lockup on the torque converter. It worked like a charm.

I splurged on a 2 1/4 exhaust split to duals at the back since the old tug just turned 70k miles. The upper cat was, as I expected, totally trashed. Looked like a bad kidney laying on the garage floor  I'm getting more intake vacuum and a sweet cummins like idle to boot! I also got a compression tester as well. Next is vacuum switch to wire in for the OD.
