Blew it up this AM out on the tollway. I was pinned in the middle lane between semi trucks when it started rattling. Looked down and oil pressure was 0. By the time I got where I could pull over it had whacked the crank. Still runs but the crank has got to be toast.
Not sure what happened, but I think it broke an intake pushrod and popped a lifter up out of the hole.

Going out now to switch motors to be ready for a points race at RT66 tomorrow.

Bummer dude. Let us know what the "autopsy" uncovers. I remember when I was driving my 383 Fury in California and the crank broke, leaving only #7 and 8 firing! Kind of a sinking feeling.....

Motor's out. Oil pump drive gear looks to be trashed. Distributor gear was perfect, cam gear looks decent. :(

This is the pump that has been in the motor from day 1. When I changed cams it had a perfect wear pattern on it and I put a cam stop on too.

I'm going to put in the original motor out of the Duster for now. Should have it running tonight.

About 700 or so, and 50 1/4 mile passes.

Not real sure, but from what I have seen so far it looks like the oil pump itself may have locked up. :?

Dennis, if it's not the pump locked up, any chance it may be how the gear was hobbed onto the cam. Rick Covalt lost a pump gear while using the same cam. Is it possible gear failures are partially cam gear related? Rick must be running OK now with one of Doc's hardened gears. Would it help to lap in the hardened gears, especially with a new cam?

Cecil, the majority, but not all of the failures that I've heard of were with MP cams, and a lot of them with the .528 in particular. I will use a hardened gear on the next motor, and probably will lap it in. Since this one had already run for 2 years and had a perfect pattern on it, we didn't think it was necessary.

I have plans to use this same cam so it's not what I was hoping to hear. I ordered two new pumps to pull the gears off for Docs heat treat but by the time I got them, and removed the gears, there wasn't enough time to get them to him without sending them 1 or 2 day air. I'll just use an old gear off a stock pump, hope that does it.
Mopar cam, the zilla killa.
Hope you can save it.

Cecil

"Hey Possum, at least now you'll have something to haul all the pieces home in when your junk blows up. "

Must be that karma thing.

Dennis,

Sorry to hear about the 'zilla motor. Hopefully you can salvage the motor without major rework.

I made two passes at Bristol yesterday, and my new electric oil pr gauge dropped its reading. I'm hoping it is just a junk gauge. Probably so, since the car drove fine all 220 miles home. :o

Don't worry, you're still the street NA slant king. The better run (1st one) was 14.96 @ 93, but with lots of wheelspin (2.3 60ft), and without EFI tuning. Gotta figure out how to launch this stick thing better. 1400 ft elevation equivalent yesterday, 19 cars qualifying and 17 in eliminations (not me 'cuz of my stupid gauge, and Drakes out).

Charles Myers was by far the fastest with a 10.24, and the Drake's did some 10.40s in practice on Friday before having problems. :x

We missed ya!

Lou

Is a cam stop required for all modified /'s? I've also got the '528 MP cam and now I'm worried. I did install a new oil pump and timing chain. I'm driving my car to Moparfest which is 8 hours away this summer. I hope this doesn't happen to me.

Al.

Lou, by your MPH you definitely should have been in the low 14's or so. Glad to hear it was just a gauge. :D

Al, making a cam stop is not a real big deal, and it really should be done on any hot Slant. One of Doug's hard gears would definitely be a plus too.
