My 1973 Duster automatic tranny has no reverse gear functioning. I am told that it will require a rebuild to correct. Does that sound right or are there further checks or adjustments I can make. If adjustments will only last me a couple months, I would rather just rebuild now and get it over with. Thanks for any input.

You need to drop the pan and take a look, the fix could be as easy as tighting the band adjuster, sometimes the locknut backs-off and the lever loosens-up to the point where the activating strut falls-out.

The other cause is blow servo seals, those can also be replaced with-out removing the trans. Pressure test the servo.
The "killer" is a broken reverse band, this happens now and then. The trans needs to be torn-down to fix that problem.

if the idle is excessively fast when reverse is engaged, it can often result in a broken band.
