Looks like there are several type of sender units. How do you tell which is for a gauge and which is for an idiot light?

A gauge sensor has variable resistance depending on temperature.

An idiot light sensor usually a contact switch that's opened or closed.

Keep in mind there are different resistance ranges for the temp senders, too, and different terminal types.

..... and keep your receipt. I've found the later range on both type replacements lately, no matter what year fit the box listing was. Took'em back three times before I got smart enough to take a meter with me (sometimes I'm a slow learner) and find that that resistance was all they had.

Finally found some correct ones on e-bay.

Dan, do you know when they changed?

All Good info. I just have a box of the sensors that I have pulled off of heads that I accumalated over the years. I dont need the idiot light type so just wondered if you could see the difference. It wont be any problem to set up a pan of hot water and a meter to test them.
Thanks,
Frank

I know there was a change from '63 to '64, but I'm not sure what changes there might've been after that; I'll have to dig.
