You'd need an adapter.

:?: is it possible to use a case from a slant six "904" with all or part of the guts and or overdrive tail from an A500? Inquiring minds want to know.

plymon, I don't think its possible to swap the A-500 tail housing to convert the A904 to O/D. I would like to know the tail house differences that prevent this swap. If the mods are reasonble such that a machine shop can help with the conversion this might be less work/expense.

I once asked Rick Ehrenberg this question, he said it is not possible to do this swap.

You would have to have one made, and it would cost way more than just going to the junk yard and getting a Slant 727 and rebuilding it.

ok I have friends that are machinists. So I could get it made for just the cost of the materals. I can figure out the Belhousing part but how would you space the inside?

What exactly did these adapter plates come in? You guys have me interested in finding one now. According to an explanation given above, they came in early 60's stuff with the 318. But, those would have been poly 318's. Did they have the same bellhousing bolt pattern?

The reason I'm interested is I have a '78 1/2 ton truck with a 727 and slant 6. It's a turd of the first order, even with the 3.55 gears. I just happen to have another 8 1/4 truck rearend in my ramcharger with 3.91's in it. If I could put an overdrive automatic transmission in there, I could also put the 3.91 rearend and probably have lower highway cruise rpm than what I have now, plus the added grunt of the lower first gear in the overdrive transmission and the grunt from having 3.91's.

The adaptor plate allows you to bolt a small block V8 trans to a Slant, that opens-up a lot of possibilities for us, like using the A500 overdrive unit.

As noted, these adaptors came in many Slant Six powered trucks and vans of the 1960s. By 1970 the factory made a 727 with a SL6 bellhousing / bolt pattern so the adaptor plate was nolonged needed.

but if the adapter plate spaces the trans lets say 3/8 of an inch? from the engine how did they space it inside. Did they have a special torque converter? or spacers at the flex plate with longer bolts ?
