I wan't to give the dart a little more pep off the line. I just put a 4bl clifford intake/w headers, and cam. There is a very noticable increase in acceleration above 2K but I believe the 2.76 gearset in the rear is killing the launch. I have a good source for lots of used 7.25 rears, but what is a good 7.25 rear worth, and what gear ratio should I look for?

In my local area one with the wheels still attached and leaf springs goes for $50....regardless of ratio.

For street use I'd say finding a 3.23 gearset would be great, if not available 2.94 would be a good highway set and better than 2.76 anyday.
If you can get a rear with 3.23's go for it, most are found behind 3spd manual cars...there were some early A-bodies with 3.55's+ but I've never seen a set in a junkyard for 7.25"...

Are you familiar with the Mopar Club there in Tucson? I forget the name of the club now, but they were pretty active the last I checked. That might be a good source for local parts and advice. There are usually several of them at the dragstrip at the fairgrounds on any given weekend. They are also at most of the local car shows and cruises.
I would agree with the $50 price on a 7.25. That is if you can't find one for free. A lot of people just toss them. I'd just give you one of mine, but they are all 2.76 gears.

I have an acquaintence that owns a house in Pheonix and lives here in Minnesota part of the year so he does travel back and forth. He's in Pheonix right now. I don't know when he's coming back to MN or when he'll go back to AZ after that.

He doesn't by any chance move cars back and forth does he? I know there are a few people that do the East Coast / West Coast treck in search of rust free sheet metal for a living.

You should get a weight on the unit and get a quote off of the FexEx Ground service web site. You will be surprised that it is not that expensive to ship, especially if you remove the axles and brake assemblies. (and drain the oil)
You need both ZIP Codes to get the quote.

If you can get a good used 7 1/4 to your door for less then $200.00 that is most likely the cheaper way to go.

Any rearend shop is going to charge at least that to swap-gears in your current unit. (The cost will most likely be $300-400 because of all the new bearings and labor time needed to get the gear mesh correct)

I work in a shop with a guy thats been working on cars for 40 years (a wealth of knowledge on how to do things the right way ) for 8 of those years he worked in a rear end shop, he has all the tools, and told me he would help me put it together.

He is very!!! picky about the quality of work, the parts that go into, and/or are re-used in his work. If the customer won't do it to his satisfaction he won't do the work. He believes that doing something half a$$ (weather the customer asks for it or not) is ripping them off. Need less to say, he is a wealth of knowedge and I intend to learn all that I can from him before he retires. True craftsman are hard to come buy and are only geting more scarce as time goes by.

So..... I got a little off target, but installing it isn't the hard part. I just don't wan't, nor am currently capable of paying 200$ for anyting on the car right now, but want to continue to make constant improvements. Some times that just means doing tings the hard( read: cheap ) way.


Thanks Doc, but I just talked to a guy in the mopar club that has 4 good 7.25 rears laying around. He told me to come down and pick the one I want and its mine for 50$.
