Well,
It is spring and i am trying to get my 70 duster started. It usually starts right up, but it is just cranking. It is getting fuel, i suspected the coil and swapped it out. No effect. I then noticed a wire that is not connected to anything near the distributor. It is coming from the wiring harness that runs along the valve cover, just before the distributor, this white or grey wire with a spade connector is hanging off. It is about the right length to connect to the distributor, but i dont see where it plugs in. Does anyone know what this wire is and if it being unconnected would cause a no start condition? I am no mechanic, but i do understand gas and spark. It is getting gas, but not starting.

Mm. Well, a disconnected wire like that has got to be lookin' to go somewhere, so yeah, I'd figure out what's disconnected. If yours still has standard '70 points type ignition, then there is just one wire that runs from the distributor body to one of the coil's primary (small) terminals. The other primary terminal gets power from a wire live when the ignition is "on". That's near the front of the valve cover, tho. If you're talking about a wire in the middle of the valve cover with a flat slider terminal on it, that sounds more like the oil pressure sender wire. Check and see if the pressure sender wire's connected to the sender. That shouldn't cause a no-start, though. Check for spark, if none, trace back along the system to see where the voltage stops. Wire fault, bad ignition switch...

Without checking the wiring dia, for color code, I would guess for the oil pressure switch on the oil pump. Will not have any effect on starting.

thanks. You are probobly right about the wire. I did not think it was important. I really have no idea what is causing the no start. The car was running fine when i parked it before winter. It cranks over fine, and i can see gas squirting into the carb. Like i said, i swapped the coil out but it had no effect. I am unsure where to go from here. it is still old school points style ignition, the car is bone stock all original parts under the hood.

What voltage do you read at the coil?

What voltage do you read before and after the ballast resistor?
