Howdy,

The story;
I pulled last season's engine apart to swap the odds & ends onto the new cast crank engine for this season. In the process I located the noise that I stood'er down for last year. Wasn't a main or rod as I'd thought but a loose flywheel. Screws were still in but no longer tight and the flywheel was "working" enough to gall the hub at the mount face a bit. Standing down was the right move.

The problem;
I have another 2.150" center flywheel and an early 1.950" center one but the cast crank has a 2.075" centering ring on it. I was unaware there was yet a third size. I'm up against the clock as the ANRA opener is the 18th.

The old small one is too heavy and I don't want to go with an "adapter ring" for the larger one if I can help it (wouldn't trust it to stay in place).

Does anyone in the Los Angeles + 100 mi area have a cast crank flywheel I can buy and pick up?
Edit: Never mind, there is no third size. The centering ring I have has been bollixed. I'll have to cobble something.

That's kind of odd...because I have flywheels from both types of engines...and the center hub/hole is the same.. the only difference being
the cast crank flywheel seems to have more "meat" in the "outer ring" and is a slightly heavier than the forged crank version...

Interestingly:
1978 Part Catalog lists:
2863402 for F body/Fury/Monaco - w/3 spd tranny
3878963 for all cars 4 speed tranny, M body-all transmissions

1976 Parts Catalog
2863402 all bodies/all manual transmissions

Maybe have a machine shop hone the center out of the early flywheel to match the hub on the crank?

Well, it looks like I do have a problem.
On closer inspection it looks as if the 2.075" centering ring on this cast crank has been turned down from 2.150". It's painfully thin in the "lip" and has a clear step at the bottom. No effing idea why, but I'm stuck with it.



Yes, I could turn the old flywheel out to fit, and it'll take the new ring gear OK, but it's about three pounds heavier (mostly outboard) and I dont really want to spin it. I see about a .250" thick weight ring on the backside, can I cut that much off without getting precession? Would that be too much into the casting?

Perhaps I should make an adapter ring up for the larger one. I could make it a press-in.

Well, I talked to a friend who has a bit of experience in modified flywheels and he advises that the old one can be turned out, lightened and rebalanced safely. Sooo ....... it's in process.

So naturally another problem's stepped up to take it's place.
