I am looking to buy a SL6 car. I found 3 different cars from 1200-2500 that I am interested in. My favorite of the 3 and in the middle of the price range is a 62 Valiant push button auto. Then there is a 65 dart auto for 1200 however I have been unable to get in contact with the guy. He answered one e-mail and gave me a tel # that does not work. The other car is a 66 dart gt 4 speed original 273 car from west cost now has SL6 in it. Still has 8 3/4 rear end in it. All 3 are very solid cars.

Now for what I want out of it. I want a 12 sec street strip SL6. I have some turbo stuff laying around from when I played with making Air cooled VW's go fast. My first thought was to turbo the stock engine and do a shift kit if I choose an auto car. I must admit I have not spent much time reading the trans section of the forum and I have some concern with the 62 904 with the push button selector.

My other thought is to build a high compression na long rod 225 with 198 rods and 2.2 pistons hyper-pak 4brl big cam and head work dutra duels and maybe a small shot of nos if needed. Or If I get a 170 do a stroker using the 198 crank and the same basic recipe as the 225 build. I saw the k1 rod and piston kit and considered it as well for the 225. Is there any other good place to find 198 stuff besides e-bay and the classifieds here. I didn't find much in either location.

I know the 4 speed would be the easiest to build as not having to fab trans kickdown cables and it being in the best running and driving shape. I personally like manual trans I think they feel faster on the street. That car also has the 8 3/4 rear end in it already. I just really like the look of the 62 valiant and it's less money and the 65 dart is cheaper yet runs and drives and is the closest to me.

Ok if you took the time to read all this garble please give me your thoughts and opinions. I look forward to being a part of the community.

I like the 66 for a couple of reasons. First, it used to be a 273 car, and someone put in a /6, which helps balance the Universe. Also I like how the 66 Darts look, and they are a nice size. Also it has the 8 3/4 differential, which is worth some $$$ that you won't have to spend later.
Taking all that into consideration, I think you should still consider the 62 for the very good reason that you like how it looks. You could probably put in a manual valve body, and shift it with the pushbuttons. That would be radical. 8)

The 62 VAL weights less. Draw backs are not much room under the hood for Turbo setup. The push button trans is NOT a concern. Im partial to the 66 Dart myself. I have a 66 wagon that will hit the streets this year.

Thank You for the replies. I looked but did not find much information about changing the inland shifter in the 66 to a hurst model...... I am going to look at the 62 friday and after I get back from a business trip next friday If I don't buy the 62 this friday I am going up to look at the 66. It's funny I probably would have bought the 65 already just because of price and it being so close to home but still no contact from seller.

I watched all the slant 6 you tube videos and as fast as the turbo cars are I really like the sound of a hyper-pak car with a big cam in it. I guess I don't have to run 12's I just want to out run the souped up mustang crowd around here.

That thing is the hotness. I realy like the 62 valiants and lancers... It's a bonus they are the lightest of the bunch. I looked at the 65 today the front fenders are rusted bad and the rear quarters need help. It did run and drive well and the floors and trunk are solid. For 1200 I don't know I think I'll spend a little more on the 62 or 66 as they are both more solid. I hope the 62 is as nice as the guy says it is I think that is the car I am going to go with.

I think I'll start a new thread in the racing section. thank you all for your input.
