I have a question about the heater core on the Volare. There is a pipe coming out of the firewall just below and left of the heater core pipes. There is anti-freeze leaking from this pipe. Is it a drain in case the heater core leaks, or is it supposed to be capped off. Please let me know.

Thanks

I used to have one of these on my '78 Volare. Its gone now, but I'm pretty sure that you do not need to cap it off. Mine wasn't capped off.
I would guess that it's there to drain, but I'm not sure.
Anybody else?

Hi urbanyil, I drive a '77 Aspen, and I wonder if the pipe you refer to is a square hole? If it is, it is a rainwater drain for the area in the cowl around the heater cold air intake and wiper motor/mechanism, just below the louvers at the rear of your hood. It is normally covered with a square rubber flap, you should see the two holes for mounting the flap on either side of the hole just above the top edge.
You can live without them, but you should have the flaps mounted, if I recall right there are three of them, or else the drain can - in theory - let engine room fumes, and even possible exhaust from a leaky flange, enter the air intake area and mix with ventilation air. If you cannot pick some off a wreck, you can make them from a piece of rubber, and just glue them on with a strip of glue along the top side only, so that they are free to 'flap' open for the rainwater, and then close again. Take the opportunity to check for rust in and around the drain channels, that area is a known place for leaks. For that reason they may just as well be left open for better dry-out!
Water should only come out when your car is wet, though, so if it is antifreeze in the water, you must have problems unknown to me. In that case you should see the coolant level in the plastic expansion tank on the side of your radiator get lower, and need to be topped up all the time. If your car have had A/C earlier, there may be holes where some coolant may come out, I am unfamiliar with that.
Olaf.
