i've got a 72 dart with the 7 1/4 rear. the car came with some really nice alu. 14x8 wheels with 3 1/2 back spacing. it's got 225-70-14s on back, and 195-60-14s on front. the back tires rub the fender well right at the widest part of the bulge. the 225s are 9 in. at the widest point and the 195- 60s are 8, but there not as tall. is there a tire size that has the same hieght as the 225 but narrower and still work on the 8 in. wheels? i would really like to keep these wheels. o ya, there the 5x4 pattern so there's not many choices. thanks, dave.

Put those front ones on the back and see if they work better. If so, go with that size. My present tire and wheel combo is 205 15's on 7" wheels with a 3.75 back space and the rears almost touch. I think the 3.5 back space is your problem. You should be looking at 4.25 on a 7" wheel. So the 8" wheel should have 1/2 the difference more back space than the 7" to keep the wheel on the center. Or close to that.

A 205 75 14 is slightly shorter.

A 215 75 14 is slightly taller.

If you will go to the discount tire sight there is a tire computer that will tell you everything you need to know. including interchange, back spacing, cross section, etc.

"Wheel width" is measured between the inside surfaces of the rim flanges.

Every tire has a recommended range of wheel width. The data is available on every tire manufacturer's website as well as www.tirerack.com and www.discounttire.com Keep the wheel width in the center of the recommended range for best results. Using a wheel that is too narrow or too wide for the tire will result in poor handling and tire damage or premature wear.
