Well actually, it is gone now. I cut a hole in the bumper where it used to be. Does anybody out there drive their car on the streets on a regular basis without a front tag,and do you get stopped? I got stopped in my PT Cruiser once without a front tag, but think they might not bother me in a classic car. Thoughts?

Sam

We have the stupid two plate law here in Maine. When I purchased my 82 LeBaron we were domiciled in Mass., a one plate state, and never installed the front plate bracket. It is hanging up in the basement over one of the work benches.

Fast forward to 2010 still no front bracket installed, never been stopped for improper attachment of plates since moving back to Maine in 1984, but keep the second plate in the trunk with two big twist ties attached to it, just case, with a; “it just fell offâ€￾ and “looking for a bracketâ€￾, story ready to go.

We have annual state vehicle inspection here in the People’s Republic of Maine that requires both license plates to be attached at the time of inspection, hence the twist ties. I just tie it on to my grill before inspection, and promptly remove it once over the curb and around the corner from the station…

So, if a cop stops me for a plate infraction, I’ll just hang it back on with the twist ties. Hopefully he won’t make too big a fuss over it.

Now that I have confessed this, I’ll probably be stopped next week…

Sam I don’t know what to tell you where you live in a state that is home to the CIA. No telling who is watching you’re peccadillo’s, and taking notes…

Sam, you know how Montgomery County cops are. You could go 8 months with no problem then get pulled over twice a week. I didn't have one on the front of my car for years and was pulled over 3 times, on the other hand my nephew didn't have one on the front of his car at the same time as me and he said he was pulled over at least two times a week until he finally put his front tag on (he was missing the bracket).

Its not a requirement in Michigan. Never had a problem out of state (including Ohio).

Depends on your local laws. It is a crime here in Washington, and I have had clients get busted for it. Get a copy of your State and County's vehicle equipment requirement laws.

Lots of folks here think it is OK to just stick a plate behind the windshield but the hard way it isn't. Also, just because you have never ben stopped for it doesn't mean it isn't illegal. All it takes is one cop in a bad mood.

Where might I find the license plate law (WA State)? RCW 46.16.010 is the closest I have been able to find, and it merely states "(1) It is unlawful for a person to operate any vehicle over and along a public highway of this state without first having obtained and having in full force and effect a current and proper vehicle license and display vehicle license number plates therefor as by this chapter provided." But it remains a mystery to me where this chapter doth provide the aforementioned info...

Zorg,I cann't recite chapter and verse but Wa does require a front plate.Check your current registration as I know I've read somewhere(maybe the reg)the statement that 'tags go on rear plate and remember Wa.St.still requires a front plate' or something to that affect. It's a $157 or $197 buck fine for non-compliance.I know there's exceptions like 'collector plates' as they only issue one plate and that goes on rear.Front plate has to be mounted to proper location on front of vehicle as on the dash or propped up in the windshield is a sure stop by 50,'Book'm Danno, the state's broke'.

I have noticed that quite a few cars don't have a front plate anymore. I wonder if it is caused by the red light cameras. i.e. it is cheaper to pay a ticket for no front plate then a ticket from a red light camera...

Red light cameras take a picture of the back plate.

I know in Oregon you are required to have both with stickers even, and cops here will nail you for it. Why don't you want a plate on the front? I don't see where that is a stupid law personally, but having been required to have them all my driving life I would say I am biased a bit.

“Mostâ€￾ cars are designed without consideration of front plate attachment. Once front plate is attached via a factory designed, crappie, cheep mounting bracket, the whole shoot’en-match looks damn cheesy. An eyesore at best, might as well stick the things on with duct tape.

I never understood why you need 2 license plates? Maryland has 2 plates, but after your initial purchase and inspection, you never have to get the vehicle inspected again. Your fenders can be full of holes or flopping in the wind, bald tires or any mechanical problems are just fine. But you got to have a second license plate. Kind of seems the emphasis on the wrong thing to me.

Of relevance to our hobby- RCW chapter 46.37, Vehicle LIghting and other Equipment.

Specific to this issue,
Quote:

The vehicle license number plates shall be attached conspicuously at the front and rear of each vehicle for which the same are issued and in such a manner that they can be plainly seen and read at all times. However, if only one license number plate is legally issued for any vehicle such plate shall be conspicuously attached to the rear of such vehicle. Each vehicle license number plate shall be placed or hung in a horizontal position at a distance of not more than four feet from the ground and shall be kept clean so as to be plainly seen and read at all times. In cases where the body construction of the vehicle is such that compliance with this section is impossible, permission to deviate therefrom may be granted by the state patrol. It shall be unlawful to display upon the front or rear of any vehicle, vehicle license number plate or plates other than those furnished by the director for such vehicle or to display upon any vehicle any vehicle license number plate or plates which have been in any manner changed, altered, disfigured or have become illegible. License plate frames may be used on vehicle license number plates only if the frames do not obscure license tabs or identifying letters or numbers on the plates and the plates can be plainly seen and read at all times. It is unlawful to use any holders, frames, or any materials that in any manner change, alter, or make the vehicle license number plates illegible. It shall be unlawful for any person to operate any vehicle unless there shall be displayed thereon valid vehicle license number plates attached as herein provided."

Under RCW 46.13.230, "The director shall furnish to all persons making satisfactory application for vehicle license as provided by law, two identical vehicle license number plates each containing the vehicle license number to be displayed on such vehicle as by law required: PROVIDED, That if the vehicle to be licensed is a trailer, semitrailer, or motorcycle only one vehicle license number plate shall be issued for each thereof."

So you can run one rear plate ONLY if your vehicle is a trailer, semitrailer, or motorcycle.

However, you may also need to check your local city or municipal codes. Depending on the facts of your particular vehicle, you may or may not be able to get away with running the license plate somewhere on the front other than the bumper. But is it really worth the hassle of getting a ticket and then fighting it in court? I don't think so. Like I said, cops have stopped several of my clients for running the plate tucked into the windshield.

Emphases on revenue enhancement… No, make that easy revenue enhancement.
