Trying to decipher if I have a Suregrip in my truck. This rear-end was swapped into my truck before I bought it. It is not original. it has allegedly 2.76 gears, has a "X" on either side of it with a dot above it and below it and has the numbers stamped on the driver's side that read:
"2070741
25"
Exactly like that... but the "25" is below the "41" I have no idea if that matters. :) oooo also, there is no tag on this thing. These stamped numbers on there are the only markings.

Just trying to make sure... Pun intended.

THANKS GUYS!

-Marc

Jack one rear wheel off ground, place transmission in Neutral, and with parking brake off, try turning the raised wheel by hand. If it turns; you don’t have a Surgrip differential.

Caculate your rearend ratio by this method.

Sorry to be a noobie... but is that good? Is that important when looking for parts, hauling or doing burnouts? Lol what other cars/trucks used that case? I would to love what vehicle my rear came from.

The 741 center section for the 8 3/4 rear ends went form 1965-1974. I believe its pretty popular on most 8 3/4 rears. Can't tell you what its from, but it has to be something 1965-1974 and could be from a car, truck or maybe even a van? I know that the Darts/Valiants could have an optional 8 3/4 which (I think) only came with the 741 pumpkin. So I guess most cars (with 8 3/4 rears) would have had these cases.

As far as how good it is to have a 741, I think most people prefer either the 742 or 489. However having an 8 3/4 is probably plenty more than enough for a slant when it comes to hauling and burnouts. I believe parts are more easily had for the 742 and 489 though.

I have a 3.91 SG 741 rear that I've hammered in my '66 for ages. The 741 gets a bad rap from those that just have to have a 489 case. I think it's fine. :D
