how much in and out axle play should a 8 1/4" have ???? and is there any way to eliminate it ?? I was thinking that if a sleeve was inserted and then the spider gear shaft that sleeve would still be free to spin, but would eliminate the in and out axle play, what do you guys think ??

The cross pin in the differential has flats against which the ends of the axles bear.

umm i will have to double check, but i am pretty sure the diff pin is round top to bottom, with only the end drilled and tapped for the securing pin,

there are two little flats on each side of of cross pin....with the clips on and pin in there is very little end play in axle

Since the wheel bearings on the 8 .25" are roller types than run straight on the axle surface, and the manual says about bearing end play: NONE, that is what goes for the axles. There should not be any play with the correct C-washers in place and the diff. pinion shaft installed.

Yeah, well, there always is some clearance. The issue Mike raised is how much is too much and can the end-play be reduced. The straight roller bearings don't care if the axle moves in and out a little bit so long as the bearing surface is in good shape.

Oh well Joshua, I stand to be corrected. There is no mention on whether the installed diff pinion shaft shall be a slip fit or whatever towards the axle shafts or not, and logic dictatates that some tiny amount of clearance will always be there. It's the book that says NONE! Sorry for spreading misleading info. I have some tiny slack in my 8.25's axles, but I haven't measured it.
