Hello everybody! I'm new to the forum and have a question about a 1971 Valiant I am looking at! When he started up and ran the car there was a tapping sound coming from underneath the valve cover and it was fairly loud. Loud as in you could plainly hear it and also hear it while riding in the car. The engine itself has 83k miles on it. I was wondering if this sound was normal or what?

Thanks for any help!

Yes, the sound is normal. Slant sixes built prior to 1981 were solid lifter engines that had manual valve clearance adjustment. It was a regular maintenance requirement that the valve clearance be adjusted avery so often.

Most owners these days (a) don't know this much less (b) know how to do it. Congratulations on finding this site where you can learn everything you will ever need to know about how to maintain your Valiant.

Use the search function on this site to find many posts of how to adjust your valves.
