Reworking the new oil pump. Drilling out a channel. Pump flew out of my hand and tried to take my finger with it

Lost just under a pint or so of blood and man do I feel thirsty. Hurts like an SOB too.

Time for a break...

Yikes! Look at it this way, at least you only lost a bit of blood and no extremities.... invest in a vice.

That's the real clincher. I've got a really nice old one, but no where solid enough to mount it. Looks like this weekend I'll be doing some carpentry.

What's actually funny was that my mom saw my "field dressing" on it and freaked out. "That's not gonna be enough!" I couldn't help but snicker a bit. She worries about me too much :)

Heh, true dat. It's still throbbing a bit, but the worst (peroxide sting) is long over now.

The swelling's gone down and I finished drilling out the channels. Now all I have to do is smooth it out and then I'm done. I just keep telling the pump that it always hurts the first time...

I was helping a buddy pull a 4 speed trans out of a late 70's Z28 camaro in my driveway several years ago. I was under the car with my impact gun, about 3 feet of extensions, and a socket mounted on a universal joint. I hit the trigger, the socket slipped off the bellhousing bolt, and the ujoint flailed around. The socket flew off the ujoint and hit me in the cheek about 3/4 inch from my eye. It would probably have turned my eye to jelly if it had hit it. My at-the-time live in girlfriend came home while blood was still pouring out of it. There was blood on the tools, blood on the creeper, blood on my shirt, face, arms, hands, etc. She basically didn't even acknowledge the fact that I was injured and bleeding. That was a warning for sure. Though that wasn't the last straw, it wasn't long after that she got the big peace sign for acting ignorant in other ways.

OUCH. Makes me glad I've never gotten a serious injury when working on a car. I've had a few nutty G/Fs in the past too. I remember my first one who slept around on me. She made the mistake of telling me while in my truck. I whipped over to the side of the road and said "Get out". That was the last I saw of her, save for one last heated (mostly one sided) phone call.

Hey, Jopapa, is this /6 you're working on still in the car? If it is, the swap is gonna make all your oil-pump-tricking-out fun seem like a walk in the park! :D

Aye, it's still in there. This job isn't so bad, save for my screwup with my hand. I've already got it almost done. I'm thinking I dill go ahead and lift the whole engine out when I do the actual swap. It'd be nice to just pull it and wheel it into the garage.

That's a lot of work just to do an oil pump job... Are you going to rebuild it while it's out?

Not a full rebuild, but I'll drop the pan and check the bearings, and change 'em if they need it. Got quite a few things I can do while it's out, so I can keep myself busy.

Actually, is there any good way to put it on a stand?

Oh snap, I knew I should've been more specific. I remembered a thread a while back where someone was having trouble getting a slant onto an engine stand. Or is that really not a problem at all?
