any ideas? I've heard stuff about removing egr, and elec. ign. upgrade and so on. Can I swap the tranny for something better suited? WHAT CAN I DO!!

My budget (keep in mind this is in Canadian Dollars) --->$750
I am mech. inclined. And I have tools and access to basically everything but a machine shop. As for time. HA! Il make it if I have to:|
If I am phoning around to wreckers, what transmission(s) or rear axels am I looking for?

I live in Victoria B.C. Canada. Where is the best place to buy auto parts?
please don't say lordco

EGR doesn't hurt power. Operating correctly, the EGR valve will be closed at high throttle settings. If it isn't working right, then you can either repair it, which will help with economy, or block it off. If blocking it off, limit ignition timing to compensate. The engine will not tolerate excessive timing with EGR disabled, so you'll have pinging under load.

Swapping in the Electronic Ignition distributor and an HEI will help. Install a 9R governor to limit mechanical advance.

3.55 gears could become 4.10's for better pulling.

What speeds do you run? The 1 bbl and stock compression will respond well to one of the Erson RV cams, and perform well for low engine speeds.

Bumping up to a 2bbl and jacking up compression helps the top end, but will not help bottom and mid-range rpm. Depends on where you need the power to be.

First I'd make sure the catalytic converter isn't plugged and that the muffler is not plugged or otherwise restrictive. A plugged cat or other exhaust restriction will kill power. After that's done I'd get a standard electronic ignition distributor for a Super Six car and set it up to trigger an HEI ignition system.

If you still want more you can go about making more HP or change the gearing. 3.55 gears isn't as bad as the 3.21s a lot of these trucks came with, but OD is still hardly usable. I'd want 4.10 to 4.56 gears, but a gear change starts getting to money.

For more HP I'd go with the Super Six intake manifold and carburetor. More power can also be had with head work to increase flow and raise the compression ratio, but that again gets into significant money.

Thank you for all the help. I really appreciate it. I think I am going to do a HEI upgrade. Do I need to replace my distributer? I also would like to change my rear end. This is something I now little about. Any input would be appreciated.

The factory electronic spark control system in your truck uses a distributor without a vacuum or mechanical advance system and the distributor must be replaced to use HEI.

Changing the rear axle as an assembly isn't difficult. Changing just the gears requires more skill and specialized tools.
