Looking for a little insight. Have a 63 Valiant 225, 1 barrel carb. Picked up the car in June. Engine was rebuilt with new old stock from the block up. Carb was rebuilt, new sending unit and fuel tank and new fuel line. Since then I've done the fuel filter mod outlined on this forum and done the HEI conversion. The problem I've had and this is the second time this occurred is that it won't idle while in gear. It will run fine 70 mph for 150 mile trip. This second time seems to be worse. I put into neutral and give a little gas and there is a slight hesitation, wait a few seconds for the engine to come back to idle put in gear and it dies. 1st time this happened I took back to the gent I purchased it from and he said he adjusted the carb and timing a bit and it worked like a dream for about 2 months. Also since the rebuild of the engine I've gone about 1500 miles. Do I just need to adjust the valves? the carb and timing again?? My next upgrade is going to be to the supersix, but I want it running nicely before I replace all those parts.
Thanks

I had this same exact problem as you. I got a valve adjustment last week and now it runs perfect. you should at least get that checked out.

Thanks Eppy, That was the first thing I was thinking from reading some of the other posts. I'll try and post the results.

Might need to give the gas pedal a nice thrashing to clean off the plugs :D

I adjusted the valve lash and that seemed to do the trick. Runs much better now and idles while in gear. To me all of the rocker arms felt too tight. One other question. 2 of the rocker arms have some movement side to side. Is this normal?

Simple answer, most engines this is normal.
