The heater on my brother's 83 Dodge van no longer blows hot air, only lukewarm. I suspect this is due to the deterioration of the originals seals in the heater system to the point where the blend door no longer seals well and cold air is sneaking past the seals.

Anybody know of a source for new gasket material for this application? So far, I haven't found anybody reproducing these seals, and I don't think any NOS gaskets would still be in good shape at this late date. Is there a generic gasket product or products I can use to reseal the entire system? I need blend door sealing as well as heater box to vent sealing.

I would check to make sure the door is closing and opening all the way. The seals in my car have deteriorated quite a bit but it still blows hot. You can just feel it coming out past the seals when the heater is off and you're driving.

But yeah I would try the window seal foam. It looks like it would be similar and would probably cost less than half of what some specialty made seal would cost.

Thanks. That is what I am going to do. The van is 27 years old and it has never had the heater box apart yet, so I figure it is time to clean it out anyway. I know the van is warming up, it has a new 195 degree thermostat in it, and a brand new radiator. While I have it apart I am going to reverse flush the heater core and make sure it isn't plugged up either.

this is how i cleaned the heater box in my 84 D100. used cutoff wheel, not too deep, to create opening and cleaned with shop-vac., and covered hole with clear plexiglass. right after i bought this truck i had to replace radiator and flush repeatedly the heater core, finally a big bunch of goo came out. andy.



as you can see, already has some leaves and pine needles after one year.

Fortunately, the heater boxes on vans are extremely easy to remove and disassemble, especially if they don't have A/C. I won't need to cut any holes, thankfully.
