The new communications cable is in place. So that is not suspect. I have switched the VR wires around both ways and during crank there is no RPM registered on the laptop. If I hook up the VR output wires to the MSD box and the MSD tach output to the ECU trigger which is labeled tach, the car runs fine, and it shows about 200 RPM at crank on the laptop.

Conclusions.
1. The jumpers are all configured correctly inside the ECU for VR pickup. So that is OK.

2. The cable is good.

3. The ECU is configured right.

4. The MOPAR distributor picks up seems good as it fires the MSD box.

Here are the questions I am hoping for help with.

1. How can I test the output of the VR during crank? Can I set my VOM for alternating current, and crank away? I am told by Matt it should put out 200 MV at crank.

2. Is it possible that the MSD box is more sensitive than theMS II ECU and just picks up the signal easier?

3. Do you think this VR pick up would work an HEI module if it fires the MSD box reliably? If so, I could use an HEI module to convert the sine wave to a square wave to trigger the MS ECU.

Thanks.

Sam

Things are improving, but still no start. It fires and sputters but will not start. It sounds as if the timing is off by a mile, but I do not know how to get it set if I cannot get it started. The timing shows 0 on the laptop gauges as a crank. Since this distributor still has mechanical timing and has initial timing set at 8 BTDC with a light on the crank, it should be trying to start with 8 advanced, if the ECU is not messing with this big time.

What I did tonight:

1. I checked the VR output with a VOM at crank, and it puts out between .18 and .24 volts. This is what it is supposed to be. So module is deemed good.

2. I was advised to turn the ECU pick up trigger trim pots to the most sensitive setting. I did that. The engine immediately begins to fire sporadically, and sputteringly and tries to start, but will not. Since it runs with the earlier ignition configuration, fuel is not a question.

So at this point here are the possible problems:

1. The coil trigger signal from the ECU is unreliable. This is s-5 on the relay box.

2. I have ignition settings wrong in the basic settings screen.

3. The MSD box, while working fine with the VR pickup does not see the ECU's signal reliably on the white wire .

4. Running the timing through the ECU, even though the timing is locked in the tuning program has moved the timing so far off it cannot start.

Any ideas from MS II friends out there? Is it possible to check the timing while cranking? I have never tried this.

I guess I could hook s-5 directly to the coil, and try to fire it from the ECU. It is supposed to work this way if I have things configured correctly.

I tried to start it the other night with direct coil control, and it seems I scrambled something critical somehow that keeps it from running right in the old fuel only mode. I don't know if I hurt software, or hard ware. Anyway, I will plug the old MS I back in, and see if it runs. If it does, I can assume my problems are software related, and maybe down load the firm ware again. If it does not run with the old MS I ECU, then I will look for basic faults int he ignition components, specifically the coil.

Of course I thought I had everything hooked up right. Likely I still had wrong choices somewhere int he software. This is not simple. I will share more later.
