I got my 62 going under its own power yesterday, fresh engine (assembled by me) and fresh trans (not by me about 3 years ago) but can't seem to get the transmission to behave. Reverse, Neutral work fine, but in Drive I only get 1st, and I get nada from 2 or 1. I can look under the dash and see the cable moving. I'm going to mess with it tomorrow, any ideas? Fluid is probably 1/2 quart over serviced.

Oh, and removing the kickdown had no effect.

Just re adjusted the 2-3 band per the FSM. Still no change. I'm inclined to say the governor, but I've had this thing up to 60, and cruised a bit at 50, wouldn't that have loosened up the weights?

Took off the tailshaft today, weights were moving good, but the weight spring seemed really stiff. Went to a spare 904, pulled that apart, and the spring in that one was a good 3/4" shorter than the one I had in the trans. Swapped them, took it for a drive, no change.
Dropping it at the shop today.
I'll post the results so hopefully someone can learn from all this.
I suspect the Valvebody.

I don't know much about pre 66 904s,but I would test the governer pressure vs MPH.If you decide to take the car to be repaired,I would pick a trans shop VERY carefully. You need a shop thats been in bussiness a long time, and has expirience with the older transmissions. You could check the trans filter to be sure the correct one is installed

Yeah, once it got to the point where I needed to check pressures, I give up, I don't have the equipment or the time. The shop I dropped it off at is a guy that all the local hot rodders use. He has been known to bench test and service stuff free of labor, just because.

Oh, the filter! I totally forgot about that aspect of having the rear pump. Does your filter have 2 suction holes? If you're not sure I'd check that before spending any money.

Got the call from the shop yesterday, apparently the valve body wasn't assembled properly, some screws backed out, and came apart in the pan. There was a significant amount of shavings in the pan. They are going through the whole thing today and will be giving me a buzz.

Well, 1000.00 later, I now have a shifting transmission. Apparently the guy who rebuilt the trans used a later model kit, had the wrong springs all over the place, tightened nothing down, and the only things good about the whole thing was that the clutches were all new. Trans is in, car has a whopping 140 miles on it. So far, so good.
