I need help finding a new differential for a 1964 Dodge Dart GT. (Push button automatic, 225 /6) Any ideas? I asked the local guys here in San Diego, and they kind of laughed me off. I'm about 80% done with a full restoration, and this and a paint job are the last couple of steps, really.

Why do you think you need a whole new rear end? Why do you think yours is bad? What sir, are the symptoms?

Well, there was a nasty grinding sound, then it started slipping, then it lit on fire. I've already got plans to have mine fully rebuilt and put in gears that give me better mileage and lower RPM on the freeway. Is that heresy around here?

Those are darn good reasons for replacing the whole rear end. Axle work isn't cheap and with that much damage it's usually cheaper and faster to replace the whole thing. Is your car equipped with a manual or automatic transmission?

Go to http://www.car-part.com/ The original part would have been a 7 1/4 rear with 9 inch brakes. There are several listed between $125 and $200 on the west coast.

I have a few good used 7 1/4 axle assemblies and can ship one to SD if needed.
Try to find the gear ratio stamping so we can get you the correct ratio.

Rhy, waith,, you may just need to replace some bearings on your rear end!!

Here is a story, I was driving my other brand 1965 F100 back from L.A. when I started hearing that same grinding noise,,and comming out from the gas station,,,tockoff up to 85 m/h...and than..Kabam,,the driver side of teh axle got on fire,,and trowed the whole Shaft with tire, drum, and all that was left in the truck was one tire in the rear!!

Hell of scary,,so, I towed the truck and whent o the junk yard ,,I got me the whole shaft with the bearrings,,I just put a new seal to the drums back plate,,left the old bearings on,,and than drove that Trck from california all the way to Delaware State back in 2007.

SO have some fait and inspect your rear end with more detail..before you go and Get another rear end ,,,(please read the Barracuda Guy experience with those fancy USA made Bearings that got messed up badly on the shaft/bearings and now he has no rear end).
