My temperature gauge reads fine, less than half, after warm up and during normal driving. If i drive around to do errands, when i jump back in to start it the gauge reads well past half, but not pinned on hot. As soon as the engine runs a few seconds or i start moving, the gauge comes back down to less than half way. Could this be the sending unit? this problem seemed to coincide with the new heater core i installed. There is plenty of coolant by the way.

That is normal-the engine"heats up" when it is off because the water stop circulating. But as soon as it runs it cools down.

To some degree, that's normal heat soak. You could put in an electric fan which would also free up a few HP.

That is normal. I do run an electric fan and 100 plus degree days it may come on more than once after shut off especially on hot black top. It cools down though and hot starts are instant and very explosive....no cranking!
