I've heard of plenty of 2.8 and 4.3 conversions in these cars, even 350 and bigger V8s with some body desecration (not really an issue for me). My question is has anyone heard of or seen such madness attempted with a slant? just curious..

We have a 'Vette here......and lots of slants. The slant is just plain too long to fit in the Vette in a practical way.

I guess that sort of figures, thanks Sandy! Is a slant + trans slightly longer than a GM or Mopar V8 smallblock then, or are they pretty comparable?

Back in the 80s Jerry Elhard had a slant 6 powered Dodge Colt that was one of the first slants to run in the 11s. You can put anything in anything if you aren't affraid to use the sawsall.

May I suggest you use a Chrysler 2.5 RWD block, turbocharge it, and use the 5 speed from a Dakota, in that shovette :)

You can easily make about 200 horsepower with the 2.5, and it's very light. it would be FAR better to drive than a horribly nose-heavy and possibly less horsepower generic chebby v-8.

Sorry, I couldn't help it.

I like the idea of the turbo 2.5/dak transmission the best. It would fit, and probably be the easiest to pull together.

We have a Talon AWD here,(same as Eclipse) It has even less room than the Vette.....BUT it is rear wheel drive and has a large trans tunnel. The heavy hitter DSM drag cars are rwd. (They run a Glide behind a longitudinal 4G63)

They make 200hp stock so the drivetrain is OK. 4.11 Gears and can take a large tire. The C of D is 2.8 and frontal area is tiny,

Lotta Sawzall.

Dont get me wrong on the Vette/slant swap. Ive put a SBC in a Nash Metropolitan and a Ford 300 6 in an early Falcon. I just dont think it would be a high value swap.

Back in 2000 or so, Hot Rod magazine put a junkyard Cadillac 500 in a Chevette. I recall that it run 9 second quarter mile. The motor was set back into the firewall.

When I visited Steve Magnante's "Cat Ranch" back in 2002, I looked that car over and even sat in the sheetmetal driver's seat. Pretty basic construction, and the firewall was pretty limited. I thnk they ran 10s... Magnante is my kind of nut.

This was in the hanging out session while he switched nitrous jets into his "Slant Sickness"-motored Valiant. We went out and he ran that carf vs. my '64 Dart. I beat him up to 75 HP shot and we were almost even, but we ran out of time after that and he couldn't try his 100 HP shot... A night to remember...

I can't believe you can still find a Chevette that isn't rusted to the ground. I used to see a lot of them back in the '80's that had well over 100K on them and were still good mechanically, but the bodies were just eaten up.

Buddy of mine had one that the tops of the shock towers rusted out on. He cut them out and welded the bottoms of a couple 5 gallon buckets in. His wife drove it for 5 years after that
