DRIVE IT! I did last year, in an 89 Ramcharger from Las Vegas to Chicago, previously sight unseen, though I spent a couple days in Vegas making (reasonably) sure I'd make it in one piece; I put tires on it soon as I got home, what was on it was like new but badly dry rotted; I wanted to do something about that out there but the PO didn't have the wheel lock key, so I crossed my fingers and hoped that would not become an issue along the road.... (it didn't fortunately) 16 of 20 lugs on the truck had these silly things on there, it was a helluva fight getting them off in the driveway once I did get home. Spinning , improper for the application, lug studs, (someone even wrapped a couple in Teflon tape like you would a threaded pipe nipple to try and "tighten" them up in the hub) I am SO glad I didn't have to mess with that alongside I-80!
I also towed a 76 Aspen, also previously sight unseen, behind that ramcharger the whole way home. 1900 miles!

I bought my current daily driver 3 years ago off Ebay, 83 D 250 pickup, home 335 miles from Wausau WI also previously sight unseen; it was a much more uneventful trip, but it was "only" 335 miles, not 1900.
the 83 is mine the 89 RC is my son's.

not much more to offer than what's already been said, but good luck on your drive. Just take it easy and don't push her too hard and watch your guages.
It's good to see another old a body in my near vicinity. I'm in James Island, btw. Old slants are getting scarce in the lowcountry, or maybe they always were...mine's a transplant too.

Go for it. The year before last I flew into Seattle, took the shuttle into Bellingham and grabbed a 77 Aspen that I bought off of here. I looked it over grabbed some belts, oil and anti freeze and drove it to Vernal Utah. I did pack tools, ballast resistor, plugs and a ECU from home. The old belts were iffy but made them to the house. It sucked down 3 quarts of oil then didn't burn any the rest of the way home. I guess the rings needed to reseat. My plan was if it didn't make it was to call AAA then pull the super six off of it and take the bus home. Life is an adventure go for it.

I made it! +1 reliability! Friday I drove to Tallahassee. I took Saturday off to visit friends in Tally, then drove the rest today.

-> Speedometer and odometer broke (it reads 80 mph at all times). Luckily I had a GPS which told me my speed and mileage.
-> Turning the key wouldn't start sometimes. So, I had to bridge at the start->solenoid or starter relay.

Besides that it was pretty uneventful which is impressive. The pinging is still there and the transmission sometimes jerks but never made a pop or whining.

O, I got about 23mpg, which seems high to me for a 225 with a single barrel carb. Does that sound right?

Ah man, I'm sorry I missed you. I need new tires too. Towards the end of the drive the car started to vibrate. The last time I was in a car that did that the tread came off. Luckily, it never got that bad--I didn't have to use the spare!

My main concern with the an old car in the low country is rust. In San Antonio it takes forever for cars rust out. In my mind, being closer to the ocean creates more salt+humidity; which is nice for breathing but bad for cars.

Anyways thanks to everyone for the words of encouragement! I saved a lot of money on towing and had fun driving an old car through the southeast. I'll see about pictures...

I hope everyone had fun at the meeting in Tennessee. I wanted to be there, but it didn't work out.

Glad to hear everything went well for you! All the issues you had I am sure you will have sorted out in short order. Sounds like fun, I would love to roadtrip in my '65, just got alot of other stuff keeping me from doing so.

Enjoy that car!
