Going to take my head to be rebuilt and shaved on Mon. I'm wondering how much I can shave I know I can shave .08 without a problem I talked to Clifford Performance and they said I could get by with .1 but I thought that was pushing it. So I'm asking the masses what has everyone gotten by with on here it's out of a 74' Dart Sport. I want to shave as much as I can without having to worry about valve clrearance and all that good stuff.
Thanks,
Jared

.1 is do-able, you'll need shorter pushrods though (you can get the stock material ones for like 4bux per rod).

if you CC your head you'll know for sure how much to take off to make what ever compression you want...

Do you really need shorter rods? Isn't there plenty enough thread on the adjustment screws in the rockers to eat up the slack?

you dont "have" to get the rods if you use a stock camshaft, the geometry will not be 100% right, but it'll work good. however anything over a stock camshaft, and you prettymuch have no choice...

I'll be happy with .09 can I do that without having to worry about anything the machine shop isn't a rebuild and I don't want them to have to worry about anything special and it's just untill I can get my spare block built and I won't be shaving the head on it at all as it'll be setup for a turbo. So as long as I can do .09 without worrying about anything I'll be happy.
Thanks,
Jared

A couple things to note:
1)make sure you do a compression check and your bottom end is tight, if you shave the head, and come out at 9:1 compression +, and the rings and pistons can't take it...you won't be happy with the results.
2) I have .1 out of my deck and head, with a Felpro Head gasket crush height of .039 and my chambers CC'd at 52.5 with a .020 overbored motor I get 9.2:1 compression...you might want to do the math, taking .9 out with a stock motor will bump you up enough, that you may have to run some super to take the ping out.
3) With the .1 and the felpro gasket, and a comp cam (smaller base circle supposedly), I had to get custom pushrods, the stock rods on the exhaust side tended to have the adjusting screw 'cup' on the rod hit the rocker arm due to the angle. On the intake side the screw had 1 thread showing below the arm edge. My pushrods were made by smith brothers in Bend, OR..their 9.715" long and I ordered them as 3/8" for extra stiffness, some slants I've pulled apart had 5/16" thick rods, and I wonder how much those flex and goof up good valve lashing...

things to ponder,

-D.Idiot
