I have a 1970 dodge dart swinger, i just replaced the head, and rebuilt carb. The engine fires right up, drives fine at higher rpms, but when I slow down stop engine shuts off, seemingly when i brake.
If someone could point me in the right direction that would be great. Thanks Pat

Vacuum leak? Put all the hoses on the carb back on?

all the hoses are on the carb, the car has drums, so I dont know if that is a power brake or not, but yea the problem is still continuing

Are you able to get the car to sit and idle?

Make sure valves are adjusted properly too. If too tight, engine will die at low RPMs.

When the car is in park, and not moving it idles fine, and runs fine, when I hit the rode, and drive it is fine, but when I slow down at a stop sign for example, while slowly hitting the brakes it kills the engine, but the next stop sign it might not even die, so I don't understand what is going on. We did a valve adjustment to specs, so i don't think there is a problem there. Thanks I will get back to the car this weekend hopefully, so I will check for leaks, and make sure all the hoses are connected properly otherwise I'm stumped.

I would also suspect the power brake booster if the car has power brakes. To tell if the car has power brakes, look at the master cylinder. If the master cylinder bolts directly to the firewall, the car has manual brakes. If the master cylinder bolts to a large round metal object, then the car has power brakes.

Will the car die if you apply the brakes while it is sitting still and idling in park or neutral?

Check your idle speed-if its to low your engine will die under load like in drive.

I took the car for three test drives about ten min each. the first two times the car was fine. The third time I approached a stop sign, and braked quickly, and the motor shut off. So I found out i do have manual brakes not power, the car has no leaks that i can see, the car idles fine in park, and in neutral, so I'sm still lost can anyone pin point this problem. Thanks pat

Will it idle in drive, you might have too low an idle speed.

High idle rpm, sometimes cuts out when engine looses rpm settling into idle during deceleration. I suspect a vacuum leak somewhere, as well as a possible low float level which is allowing fuel to slop forward causing a lean condition under braking.

Engine should idle down to 500 to 550 rpm in gear, and tick away forever without a problem.
