A coolant filter like Gano or Tefba would be nice to install, but their prices prevent me from doing that. Most truck diesel engines have coolant filters installed, or available as an option, and they may be a good alternative for a slantsix too.
Here is a link showing the fitting of a filter on a Ford diesel truck, it it just to show how a similarl setup could be used on a SL6 mopar, the photos are excellent and will give some input to diy.

Coolant filter mounts can be googled for prices, or be had from a salvage yard. Besides trucks and buses, old industrial engines often have such equipment.

Has anybody done it?

Olaf.

BTW, in the same guy's web page, there is a chapter on Adding a Heater Core Bypass to a Ford Cooling System, they have the same problem as I have in my Aspen; HOT coolant flowing through the heater core constantly!

I don't like it. The point of a Gano or Tefba filter is to stop trash heading directly from the engine block/head into the radiator. A bypass-type filter installed in the heater lines can't do that. But if you do it this way, with a bypass filter from/for a heavy-duty diesel engine, pick your filter carefully. Some of them contain a solid additive cake meant to gradually dissolve in the coolant, and the chemistry isn't necessarily compatible with any/all passenger car coolants.

I put one of the bypass style coolant filters on my GMC C7000. We are lucky to have a huge truck graveyard in our county. I got the filter base and hoses for $15.

They are the easiest to find on 60 series Detroit diesels. They are located on the front of the engine and have a nice heavy steel bracket.

.

Did you mount it in the heater circuit as shown in the link, and have you noticed any visual difference to the coolant? Any coolant temperature issues gone?

Olaf.

I hooked it into one of the heater hoses. The temp is same as always, 185-195*

8.2's like to run warm for some reason.
