I think I already know the answer to this, but I'm grasping at straws here...

Would it be okay/safe to tow a vehicle equipped with a spool on a car dolly or flat tow it?

I hate the idea of dolly towing it backwards. I did that once and swore I'd never do it again...

I'm trying to make it to Clay City this weekend and just lost use of the car trailer. It's about a 3 hour drive.

I know it was pretty common back in the 60's for racers to do that, but it will shorten the life of your slicks considerably. If you were going just across town it would be fine, but for that kind of distance its going to be a lot harder on them.

There's no such thing as too much cam....only not enough engine!

If I have to go this route I will find some street tires for the tow to and from the track.

My main concern is the spool since it locks the rear wheels together and makes turning a real chore.

I am checking with my insurance to see if a rental trailer will be covered...

Rent the trailer.

Get your coverage changed to make sure liability and contents (race car ) are covered. Then when you get your own trailer you will be ready.

Get your tow vehicle "race ready" so you can just plug in . This means a brake controller.

I like my race weekends better when its more about racing than towing.


I always get a kick out of guys moving a $30,000 race car with an $800 trailer........and some old chain and load binder across the chromoly tube frame.

Arrow Tipi Inc was nice enough to purchase a nice lil race car trailer this year......sometimes we use it at work......


I sewed up some wheel basket tie downs to specifically work with my new cut 14.50x35x16.5s. By far better than any other tiedown method.

U Haul car trailer is way way more smart.

What gear is in the rear Rob? Flat towing anything higher than a 3.55 or so gets very hard on the gears going down the road.

Oh yeah, you'd also have to pull the driveshaft and plug the tailshaft on the trans so all the oil won't run out on the road.

Dennis, we dolly towed quite a bit with GodsRods Duster I. I have the plastic plug for the tailshaft.

All is well - The towing company's insurance stepped up and is covering the U-haul trailer. I just picked it and the Duster up.

I have a briefing I have to give from 6-8 tonight, but after that I'll head over to the garage for a little while. Lots left to do before Friday!
