I am trying to revisit the resto of my 65 Dart. I am planning to fabricate a new instrument cluster using "modern" gauges and am looking for advice regarding the current mechanical speedometer coming from my automatic transmission. I looked at some mechanical speedometers from Autometer and like a few styles but cannot get a representative from this Co. to commit to this application. Can anyone tell me what mechanical speedometer will work (in other words just accept and be compatible with) in this vehicle?

I'm doing the same on my '64 Valiant, using the stock trim panel over modern gauges. I've been communicating with this company and am impressed by their eagerness to work with their customer, and even to custom design new gauges.

I want to buy gauges that look similar to stock, so this is the link to those I've chosen for the Valiant. They have other series that might work better for you.

Heck on my Ford I used Auto-meter electric about 31/4" outside bezel


and my 63 Dart has a 4" speedometer (stock).

When I built a instrument panel for my old '71 Demon, I used Stewart Warner Stage III gauges. This was 30 years ago and that series is not longer made. But the connector on the back of the speedometer was the same as the one for a stock '66 A-body speedometer. So connecting the speedometer to the transmission was as simple as using a '66 speedometer cable.

I would suspect that newer gauges use the same connector and it may be a "standard". I would also suspect that the folks at Autometer don't have a glue on what cable to use to connect the speedometer to the transmission. But I just gave you a possibility.

If you can't find a mechanical speedometer that will work, there is the GPS Speedometer Option.

Shop around, and check boat shops.

I appreciate all the replies. I am just gun shy about this car and the "year specific" components.
I have found that this year seems to have used items that didn't translate to later years?
The cable goes into the transmission with a plug looking insert and I don't know (but will check) the rear of the speedometer and at that point will know for certain about threading etc.
If anyone has a 65 or knows for certain that another year speedometer is indeed that same as a 65 I would greatly appreciate it.

Yes, '65 is a transitional year for certain stuff, the speedometer cable being one of those items. The only difference between the '65 and '66 cable is the transmission connection, the connection on the speedometer is the same.

As I said the threaded connection for the speedometer is a "standard". I would try the Autometer gauge and see if it works, if not, return it.
