Ok, so this what I know now:

The valve cover isn't the issue. There is nothing actually interfering with anything under there, and nothing is hitting or rubbing.

What I DO have are amazing self UN-adjusting rockers. Several were in various stages of loosening up, and at first I thought "Crap, the cam is going flat", but upon closer inspection, most of the adjusters have just worked themselves "up" and the lash was all over the place. I'm surprised it did this within, literally, 20 total minutes of running since I adjusted them (while it was running).

So, I see another thread is conveniently covering this topic right now. Looks like I'll need to see what I can come up with there!

Thanks for the help, and hopefully I'll have a "happier" update soon!

Grant

Was it quiet at first, and then get noisy with running? Those adjusters should be hard to turn. Can you put a wrench on one with a valve closed and get a torque reading? Maybe some one with an open motor that has good rockers on it could do the same and report back with a normal torque spec.

My concern is that it is not the rocker adjustments that are changing.

Sam
They are ridiculously easy to turn. When the load is off there is very little effort required to turn a few of them. I thought it was odd that they didn't have jam nuts on them (my history of valve adjustments has been on VWs which do have jam nuts), and that all you do is turn them. Some were tighter than others, but all seemed easy to me.

I initially thought the cam was wiped, but since it is a reground core that was good (not soft), and I'm running essentially stock springs (just brand new) with only 90 lbs installed seat pressure, I highly doubt that happened. Plus, the adjusters had visibly moved from where they started.

As for noise, it was very difficult to know how much valve noise there was initially because the exhaust leaked like a sieve. I know they were adjusted correctly at the time, and now they are way out. One had moved so much that the adjuster was almost completely up in the rocker threads and the pushrod was hardly touching. I have never seen that, but it was obvious it had backed out.

That sounds pretty fixable. Good.

Grant,

Click on the red link below my name to view pictures. Take a look at the cover on my 9.5 to 1 compression engine. On the back hole I am running a unit that looks like a breather but it is not. It has a PCV valve built into it. Note the smaller hose.

The larger hose on the front is a breather that goes to the air cleaner for filtered air.
The front hole doubles as the oil filler.

Installed a Spectre Breather w/Dorman #42344 gasket 11/2008 This is the PCV unit I used http://www.spectreperformance.com/#CATALOG.4284
With this air breather http://www.spectreperformance.com/#CATALOG.4277

Hope this helps.

It would be nice to hear your engine idling around 500 or 600 rpms. That way we could hear the valves better.

Get some nice thick Remflex gaskets for the 2" exhaust flanges. They will stop your exhaust leaks.

Ted,
Actually the manifolds aren't leaking, it was the downpipe to the crossover pipe I made that runs under the trans. I was doing some work on that, and it was loud as heck.
Thanks for the tip on that type of PCV. I will definitely look into that, looks simple. I was going to drill another hole in the valve cover, use the gasket off the hydraulic motor and plug it in, but yours looks alot cleaner.

As for the valve issue. It's all fixed. Runs beautifully, and I was stunned to see just how much rotation I have on the pushrods! No wonder they started loosening up! A set of adjusters/locknuts for a small block Mopar and the valves are VERY quiet, and still clear the valve cover.

Quiet enough to hear another problem. Took me awhile to figure it out, but I was getting a louder "clunking" near the bottom end, but it wasn't bearings. Turns out that when I put the oil pan on I must have shifted the pick-up tube over and the crank is just slightly hitting it which resonates through the hollow pan something fierce. So, I need to pull the engine, pull the pan, shift the tube (weld up if it's damaged), and reinstall/seal it all up. UGH!

Good thing I didn't hook everything up, just enough to get it running and see what was up.

Thanks for all the help! I hope to have good sounding videos soon. Gotta finish my pole barn build first though.

Grant
