Yeah, it makes it look like he's really zipping along! :D

Hopefully the Duster will live up to the cool graphics...

I got quite a bit knocked out last night. :D

I got all the wiring done with the exception of the MSD to distributor wires. I don't want to cut the MSD pigtail and don't have the mate to the pigtail. I'll try to find one today.

All the other stuff actually worked when I flipped the switches! :D

Fan? Check! (it even blew the right direction the first time)
Water Pump? Check! (switched the wires to spin the right direction)
Fuel Pump? Check! (need to get some racing gas)
Taillight? Check! (I piggy backed it with the fuel pump)
Ignition? Check! (well, it might once I connect the MSD to the dizzy)
Starter? Check! (it spins the motor anyway-need to check the neutral safety switch)

I even put water in the radiator and nothing leaked! :D

I'll put some oil and a little tranny fluid in it this evening to be ready for the initial start up. Gotta get another filter and more oil to change after the break in.

Day 7 of this latest insomnia phase with zero sleep the last two nights... I'll bring plenty of sunflower seeds on the drive to Clay City tomorrow...

Long story, but we finally got the new motor to fire up and idle late Sunday afternoon. More soon...

Well, Clay City 2011 was similar in many ways to Bristol 2003 with GodsRods Duster I... http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5217

I showed up with an incomplete race car and only half an idea of what all still needed to be done.

In the fine "Slanted Family" tradition, there was no shortage of help available to get me headed in the right direction.

We chased some electrical gremlins all day Saturday in between rounds. I got to announce for the Slant 6 rounds, so that was fun. :D

We were getting weak/intermittent spark and went into troubleshooting mode. There were several culprits like a weak battery, missing ground strap, etc.

During the troubleshooting I accidentally fried the nifty MSD 6AL-2 box by testing spark too close to the box. The spark liked the idea of jumping to the box instead of the ground and we all saw the smoke... Strangely, there was no spark at all after that!

So, Ryan and Whitney were nice enough to run me to the nearest Advance Auto to get a GM HEI module to replace it. Ryan called Rick and even dowloaded all the needed diagrams and information. He had it right there on his I-phone and laptop for easy reference! Thanks Ryan! :D

We got the HEI installed and there was spark again, but it was still intermittent and weak, so back to checking grounds and such again. I was scraping paint like a madman with a screwdriver! Yeah, I was a little frustrated and somewhat desperate at this point...

Lou Madsen showed up Sunday morning and had a spare coil and distributor. Coil checked out okay and it seemed that the distributor was okay as well.. But wait!

Holding the distributor in his hand and spinning it there was good spark. Once installed in the engine the spark was weak and intermittent again. The new pick up module was grounding itself out!

Lou let me borrow his spare distributor until I can get a good one set up. Thanks yet again Lou! :D

I came back from the tower after one of the rounds of eliminations Sunday afternoon and Isaiah came running up yelling, "Rob! You need gas!" Apparently we were ready to actually fire this thing up! :D

I ran up the hill to the fuel point to grab a couple gallons of their finest 110 and fairly soon after that it began to sputter to life. There were still some issues like the fuel regulator being set too high, some gunk in the needle and seat of the carb, loose carb inlet, no throttle return springs... You know, those stupid things someone like me would overlook.

We did, however, get it to run and idle enough to set the inital timing and put smiles on a few faces (especially mine :D )

A huge "Thank You" to everyone that leaned over a fender or offered advice or helped push the car on the trailer while I made car noises and steered...

(Yes, Thank you for the oatmeal raisin cookies Wayne. :D But you're STILL a "Poser"! :P  )

The "Slanted Family" is truly the best of all families! :D

I've got another long list of "To-Do's" after this weekend. Gary's parting words were, "Safety, safety, safety!"

I need a little "recovery time" and still need to hassle with the insurance on the car trailer along with catching up on a few hundred "Honey Do's" I've neglected lately...

Tune in again for the continuing saga of GodsRods Duster II... :D

I was going to spend the evening at the garage, but my heart just wasn't in it today... Maybe tomorrow... :(

I finally worked up enough motivation to look at the Duster for about an hour yesterday.

I cleaned the offending needle and seat and adjusted the float to cure the severe flooding issue we had at Clay City.

Unfortunately, before I could see if I had cured the problem...

1. The battery died again
2. The end of the throttle cable broke in half
3. The fuel pump switch started to die
4. Home Depot called to let me know that the 850 square feet of flooring we had ordered for the basement was in...

(I can work around #1-3, but #4 is gonna keep me outta the garage for awhile. )

I doubt I'll make it to a test & tune this year, but I WILL do my best to get this new engine running long enough to break in the cam and get things retorqued and the valves set.

(Yes, the plan is still to put this new motor in the Challenger over the winter. I know, I know,... I'll NEVER make a pass at this rate... I'm a mess, but at least I realize it. )

The car trailer will take about a month or so to be repaired. All the parts are on order. Frank will be getting back a better trailer when all is said and done...

You mean Tom's Colt? That was more tongue in cheek than being serious. I would like to have a father/son project to do with Chase (15), but I'm not really getting anywhere with that at the moment.

I appreciate the support of everyone here and don't mean to frustrate anyone with my constant floundering.

Getting the new engine that's in the Duster running and broken in is the number one focus. I won't make it to any test & tunes this year, so once I get it broken in and retorqued, etc I will pull the wounded engine out of the Challenger and move the new engine over there. (Kinda using the Duster as a test stand I guess. :) )

The goal for the winter will be to get the Challenger set up and ready for next season.

If by some chance local interest in the GodsRods Duster takes off I'll set the kids loose on it and let them put the GodsRods Duster I engine in it. It's just sitting there on the stand waiting for a home. It should run mid to low 14's (maybe better), which is just about right for teaching teenagers to drag race.

So, priorities for next season are:

1. Challenger with new engine.
2. Duster with original engine from the first Duster (only after Challenger and if there is help)

This was always the long term plan. An ultimate race car for me that I can race until I can't race anymore and a solid mid range race car to teach kids about wrenchin', racin' and witnessin'.

Thanks for the nudges from time to time. Don't give up on me Mark.
