For the first time today I got a Hurst shifter to work on my 833OD. I had to have it rebuilt twice before it would go into reverse. Over the years I have relied on the Inland shifter that came with one of the first aluminum case A body trannies that I got. It has never failed to work properly but it lacks the more precise feel of a good Hurst shifter. Anyway when I drove it I realized that the shift lever is shaped so that it operates about 4" closer to the dash than the one I am used to. I use a 5 point seat belt and 1st and 3rd are about as far as I can comfortably reach. I will probably eventually get used to it but I just wondered if there are any tricks to get the shifter pattern back a little? I have four of those aluminum brackets that adapt the shifter to the tailhousing but they are all the same and one of them was the one that came on the 65 A body 833 transmission that I got the Hurst off of.

I run an A/F body a833 in my 60 Val with a Hurst competition plus and the short 10 inch straight stick with the classic white 4 spd ball.I had to angle the shifter handle to the right some to clear the seat but it works well and provides fairly short precise shifts.To angle the handle,Itook a cutoff tool and went about a 1/4 inch above the bolt holes and cut about 3/4 through the handle and bent it over to the right,then I wrapped the the stick above and below the cut with wet rags and migged the cut together let it cool and touched the weld area with a little paint.You can not see the weld with the boot on and it didnt hurt the chrome(very good chrome on a factory hurst stick).
A 62-65 B-body stick will also work without modifacation but it increases the shift throw and feels more like a 1ton truck than a hotrod.
Also you can go to Summit racings website and they have the full listing of shifter sticks and you might find somthing there.

I drove the car again today and compared the shape of the stick with the one on the Inland, they are virtually the same. The ball feels like it is in the right place in 2nd or OD. The throw must be longer than the Inland because the ball definately goes quite a bit futher forward in 1st and 3rd. The Hurst I have doesn't have adjustable stops and the throw on the shifter arms seems to be right. That short straight stick that Hyper-Valiant mentioned would certainly shorten the throw but it seems like a staight handle would put the ball pretty far forward as my handles are bent to the rear by quite a bit. I will look at the various catalogs or websites to see what is available. The last guy I saw with a T5 let some brute drive it and the shifter handle broke right off.

Seymour, leave the T-5 to the other guys. If you run slicks and launch like you normally do, you may be holding more than the shifter in your hand! Lou says not, but I don't trust him!

A truck or van OD shift hange can be heated and bent to the desired angle.

Just repaint it as the are painted black.

Doesn't Gunslinger make the Hurst shifters now?
