Help still needed! I attached a short video with sound, and you can hear the knocking. Still sounds like the 5th or 6th cylinder/journal area???-Thanks Dan

This noise is hard to get a fix on due to my tin can laptop speakers masking any fidelity. Is it a clank-clank, or a thunk-thunk sound?

Can you feel this rapping when a hand is placed in the oil pan at the rear of the engine while running?

Well I haven't put my hand in the oil pan yet, but I will definitely put my hand on it tomorrow!Down behind the starter is where I have put my hand and it seems like where the sound is coming from.

I got a mechanical oil pressure gauge today, and I should be able to hook it up tomorrow also.

a thunk-thunk sound

Where are you? Central Texas covers a lot of territory.

When tracking noises, I sometimes use a mechanic's stethescope. Oh, and watch the fan and belts when you're working around a running engine. You'd be amazed at what they can do when you're not expecting anything.

Do you have a broomstick or a piece of rubber hose?

yeah I put a piece of hose on it, and it still sounds like #5 or 6 towards the transmission. It seems to come and go more now knock knock knock------------knock knock knock knock knock knock------------knock knock knock??? If it's not a crank bearing I will be surprised. Raining and cold and no garage to work in.

I guess I'm really screwed, as Image hasn't told me what's wrong, or I'm totally looking in the wrong area.

start your motor and write down the oil pressure in PSI under four conditions: (1) cold at 2000 RPM, (2) cold at idle, (3) hot at 2000 RPM, (4) hot at idle.
1.) Cold at 2000rpm 39 psi (terrible noises!)
2.) Cold at idle 35 psi (mild noise)
3.) Hot at 2000rpm 39 psi (terrible noises!)
4.) Hot at idle 34psi(mild noise)

oil pressure light always seemed to work correctly, but I am not sure about the gauge? I just swapped the light for the gauge(mechanical)

Hmmm. Those are acceptable numbers, but I would expect a bit more of a PSI difference between the hot and cold readings. Might be you have spun a bearing which is blocking an oil feed hole. I think you are doomed to pull the motor on this one. :(

There are a few MMLers in the Dallas area. www.moparmailinglist.com

With the engine idling, pull one plug wire at a time. You'll hear a pronounced difference in the sound when you locate the cylinder with the bad bearing. Don't run the engine for too long, or drive the car. The crankshaft might still be regrindable. It won't be if you allow the rod to hammer the journal.

I have resigned my self to pulling the engine. Not sure if I will rebuild it completely or not yet.
-Who sells a Good rebuild kit for a daily driver?
-Would I be better off piecing my own kit together?
-Anything I should watch out for? (shoddy parts Manufactures?)
Thanks Dan

There should be a Sticky about engine rebuilds
