Gee, I did valve reliefs in my Chev V6 pistons by hand with a die grinder and I COMPLETELY forgot to measure masses after. Wish I had thought of that.... Doubt they could be more than a gram or two off.

I just got an email from Gerald Wright. He's gone through the head and flowed it.

The valve guides are very worn, which could explain the radial interference with the valve notches. :shock:

Here are flow numbers and general info about the head:

Spring pressures are 160lb @ 1.825" and 355 @ 1.275 which is .550 lift
Spring diameter is 1.50 inches outside
There is .810 clearance between top of seal and bottom of retainer
Intake vale diameter is 1.83 with 11/32 stem
Exhaust valve is 1.55 with 11/32 stem

Flow bench set up used 3.5 inch bore and 1/2 inch clay radius entrance for intake and no pipe on exh
Numbers have been adjusted for atmospheric conditions
The highest pressure drop the bench was capable of was used at each lift and converted to 28"

LIFT Flow numbers in CFM (rounded to nearest CFM)

So, this head fits right in between the head that Gary Bruner ported that is on the new Challenger engine and the head that Gerald Wright ported that is on the GodsRods Duster II engine.

The Bruner head was flowed on a different bench at 25", but everyone seems to like flow numbers so...

Exhaust = 1.450

Gerald Wright built the head on the GodsRods Duster engine and flowed it on the same bench in his garage. It was his first Slant 6 head porting job, so he was fairly cautious.

I got an SFI scatter shield for the Challenger! :D

Now I feel a little better about launching this thing off the trans brake. :shock:

I also got a set of "old school" corner scales so I can fiddle with some weight reduction on the Challenger and GodsRods Duster II. :D

I pulled the harmonic balancer off the original Challenger engine and moved the threaded insert in the crank snout over to the new race engine. :D

Hey, 10 minutes here,... 10 minutes there... It all adds up (slowly :lol: )

Next I'll mount the external oil pump stuff, motor plate and oil pan (after I reinstall the pickup in the side of the pan [with loctite!])

After that I can put the new engine in the Challenger and start hooking things up! :D

But you dont need the corner scales for the weight reductions... you need hole saws, cit off wheels and sawsalls:D

True Dat!

I'll start focusing on the weight reduction once I actually get them running and on a track under their own power. :lol:

I've wanted a set of scales for quite awhile. These aren't digital and/or calibrated, but they'll give me a decent idea of weight distribution and help me keep track of the weight reduction once I get started.

They're just bathroom scales with angle iron frames to act as a fulcrum. Multiply the scale reading by four for the actual weight. I'll get some pictures to post.

Howard used them to set up his Dart Sport a long time ago and hasn't used them since then. I think he said he got them from a circle track guy.

It very well could be. In 2007 Norm raced for Slant 6 points at Bowling Green (Beech Bend).

Norm raced it at a bunch of different Mopar and Slant 6 events from 2003-2010. His home track is in Calhoun (Paradise Dragstrip) where he and Ron Parker would race just about every weekend.

Hopefully it will become a regular fixture at Ohio Valley and or US 60 dragstrips this season. Bowling Green is only about 75 miles from me too, so I should check that track out as well... We'll see...

The guy that owned that car was a banker? Nice guy. He was talking about retiring.

Beech Bend is a nice facility, even has showers. 1/4 mile too.

When I pulled in on Friday afternoon I was greeted by the slant guys. Immediate questions about the engine, was I going to race with them etc. I even met Seymour!

I pissed the guy off that had the SC slant Arrow. I had to wake up and run the heater a couple of times and I didn't have a working choke. I had to rev it a few times until it would idle. It woke him up. I still had the headers corked. My car was fairly quiet and 100ft away from his motor home. Pipes facing the opposite way.

I never made a full pass. Damn shifter kept hanging up. Believe it or not 3 speeds on the columns have issues.

If I am not working I might be going up to Kelley's Bees up by you first weekend in June. They do a big bee keeper event there.

That other feller you mention got a bee in his bonnet fairly easily. :lol: He don't race with us no more...

A couple ideas I have for when I finally do start paying more attention to the Challenger.

One of the first things Gerald noted that would pick up a tenth or so was to seal the hood scoop to the Flying Toilet. The hood on there now was made using a hood from a Charger with a Six Pack type scoop on it. It's cut at the back leaving a big gap so that the air runs right through rather than being directed just to the engine.

I saw this thread on Moparts and thought that the cowl induction scoop was a good idea along with blocking off the grille.

I think an Arrow hood would be a good fit for the Challenger since they are basically the same dimensions (52" wide versus 59+" for an A or B body). And they actually make fiberglass parts for the Arrow. :lol:

Gerald has flowed the new race head from Howard Davis and says that it is the best flowing head yet. :wink: Numbers coming soon. :D
