I have a problem with intermittent power being sent to the gauge cluster, through the round plug on the back, and I've narrowed it down to broken wires because with a voltmeter on continuity I can wiggle the wires and it will break continuity, also the gauges will work and then wont when its plugged in. How big of a job is it to rewire this section of the harness? Is this plug available through a vendor/parts store for replacement?

Also my fuel gauge reads about a 1/4 tank low and the temp gauge never worked when it was still hooked up, I went into the parts store and they want 60 dollars for the voltage regulator! Is there any alternative to this or do I just have to bite the bullet and fork over the money for that little part.

Seth

Check the float in the gas tank. They develop cracks and take on fuel, leading to the gauge reading low or not at all.

There are inexpensive adjustable solid state IVR's on Ebay for less they $20 and you can always do the Radio Shack voltage converter for a few bucks and some soldering.

Hi
Seems like I have the same problem as Seth with my ´67 A 100. In the 'Article Part' I read the one by Chuck Rivers 'Early A-Body instrument gauge problems'. But here in Germany it seems I can't get a voltage regulator at all!
So what's the thing about the Radio Shag voltage converter and what´s an IVR?

:?: :?: :?:

When I saw that on a '68, a pin on the PC board had become slightly loose; that's probably more likely than a broken wire. It is not difficult to solder the base of the pin with the cluster sitting on a bench; just use normal careful electrical soldering technique.

IVR is instrument voltage regulater.

Its a new Board and I made sure to check that before installing, and I just had it apart yesterday and I checked then also. Its definitely the wires leading to the plug, or the plug its self, I would like to source a new plug and splice it into the harness to fix both dilemmas, also the plug is a little beat up from being on the car for 37 years

Nongan,

I suspect that your gage cluster is configured a bit different than my 1967 stile, but the idea is the same. I had loos pins & burnt pins, broken copper ribbon as well as disintegrating connectors causing problems.

All I did was make up a jumper harness where some of the conductors bolted directly to the gage serviced, and some soldered to copper conductor on board. These jumpers were than installed in a new 4 or whatever size needed gang connector (clear next to spedo cable head) and the old pin connector was removed and replaced with the mate to the new connector. Now all the splices are in one connection to dash harness for easy servicing the next time cluster has to come apart.
