Hey All,
Here is Lorrie Van Haul's Warranty Plate.

Image

The second tier of windows lists her axle as:

3000 lb Capacity, that it is a "39", the "Make" is Chrysler, and it a Model "RA36".

Where can I find a decoder to find out what the "39" and the "RA36" means?

Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated.

TIA

JC

Hey All,
Lorrie Van Haul has a "39", Chrysler Model "RA36" Rear Axle.

Have finally found out what those numbers mean.

According to John Kunkel, over at MoparChat, the "39" means it is a 3.91:1 Differential Gear Ratio, and the "RA36" means that it is an 8.75 "Sure-Grip" limited slip Differential.

Hey Doc,
That turned out to be what the "39", "Chrys", "RA36" on the Second Tier of Lorrie's Warranty Plate got interpreted as. Was also told that an "RF36" would NOT be a "Sure-Grip" Differential.

Am eventually going to get around to getting under Lorrie with a wire brush and cleaning up her Rear Axle and giving it a coat of Ospho. But that will have to wait till the Engine, and Transmission are all working properly.

Was having a problem with the Shift Mechanism. It would go into "P", "R", "N", and "D", but not into "2" or "1". Couldn't see any reason for it not to, so the first thing that was done was to give it a couple of squirts of oil, and it freed right up. It is working fine now. Love it when THAT happens. :)

Anyway, thanks for the response.

JC

easy way to tell if it is a sure-grip or not.. Jack rear of vehicle off of ground (both wheels), put vehicle in neutral and turn one of the rear wheels... if they turn i the same direction, its a sure-grip, if the wheel you are not turning, is turning the opposite direction of the one you are turning its NOT a sure-grip, and is what is known as an "open" rear end.. ie: peg-leg..

Hey Mr. OF,
Just went out and did what you said to do. They both turn in the same direction! :)

Anyway, thanks for the words of wisdom. There sure is a lot to learn about these old vehicles, isn't there?

BTW, how old ARE you? I'm 73.

Hope YOU are well.

Oddly the mid-60's Dodge Forestry Truck the State of Oregon used all were equipped with a slant six, 11" clutch, NP-435 and an 8.75" 4.56 rear diff... Can't miss the faded green trucks in rural areas and in junkyards...

Which "pig" is in there? 742-741? What would be the width?

Backing platE to backing plate.

The numbers for the pig are raised in the center casting. Sometimes close to a large X.

Hey Mr. RT,
Will have to get under Lorrie and see if I can find it.

BTW, if you don't get a response from me about this, it's because the computer is acting up. Have a dual manitor system, and the primary monitor is starting to blink to black and come back on. And then every once in a while, it just goes black. Can turn the monitor off and back on and it comes back.

It's not the monitor that is the problem, but the AGP card which is a Matrox G450 Dual Head.

Am looking to get another one.

Anyway, will look to see what the numbers on Lorrie's Differential are when I can.

Hope you are well.

I've been resting all morning in anticipation of installing Lorrie Van Haul's Intake/Exhaust Manifold which is all ready to go back together.

Anyway, thanks for the response. Will be in touch.
