Parts store variety ones are $100 I believe, or if you go wrecking yard I guess $20-30?

I don't know about taking starters apart, I never have. Honestly I wouldn't bother. Kragen re-maned ones are $20. Check your service manual out I think it has detailed diagrams etc of starters.

So I can't open up the top of the starter and get another bolt? Or am I just going to have to try it? (and hope I don't break something else...)
Replacing that bolt requires nearly complete disassembley of the starter to remove the "brush plate" that it is mounted to. After the "brush plate" is out, you need to unwrap/unsolder a wire and then remove the solenoid from the brush plate. Now you can replace the stud. Should be available from your local starter/alternator repair shop. Might be better off to just replace the whole brush plate assembly, it comes with a new stud already installed. I get the whole brush plate from a local rebuilder for under $10.

While it's all apart you can replace any worn bushings, and the brush plate with brushes attached.

It's a big job if you've never done it. Not too bad with some experience.
I rebuild all my own starters and alternators with parts from the local rebuilder.

Ok, looks like I'll be yarding for a "new" starter. Sorry I'm new to this, how do you tell the mini starters (apart from the apparent size difference)? I'll keep this one to take apart. I love figuring out how things work.

Also, don't you have to shim a starter so that it contacts straight? Seems like I remeber something like that from auto shop? (Good teacher, bad program. I've learned more here!)

Thanks! -zorg

Has some good pictures there. Nippendenso is the company that makes the ministarter.

Look for later model Dodge trucks for your mini-starter.

Chevy starters need shims....Mopars don't.
