I just located the small output bearing and seal for my 64-66 A-833 transmission. The bearing is a Federal Mogul 206-1 ($23) and the seal is a Federal Mogul 8160S ($8.41). This is the seal that IS NOT in the rebuild kits you usually buy.

I took the main shaft and input shaft to a local shop to have the bearings pressed off and the guy said "Sure, That'll be 2 hours at $90, $180 should about do it". I said "WOAH! I could buy a press for that". He said "maybe you should".
So I took back my parts and did. I bought a 12 ton press from Harbor Freight for $100. It's not the slickest tool in my shop but it'll do. Saved myself 80 bucks. I've always wanted a press anyway. This IS a "Do It Yourself" hobby. Now I can justify buying more tools.

You bet. I already pressed off the bearings. I smashed a penny for the kids. Did you ever see the 50 ton press on letterman. We could have some fun. And yes I know to be careful. 12 tons is a lot of potental.

Did it come with any sort of brackets or supports to hold something in place or allow the pressure to only be applied to say a screw?

I boght one of those about 15 years ago. It has probably paid for itself at least ten times over.

Good score Mike, I have looked at getting one of those but the truth is that I am able to get most everything apart with a "bearing spreader / support" (I don't know what else to call it) and a small bottle jack.
So what do I use as a nice ridgid frame, an empty SL6 engine block of course!
(For things like axle shafts, I have a friend with a big press)

I like the idea of learning to do more and more stuff myself. I wouldn't mind a somewhat small local group of friends with similar interests and different skills. I need to learn to weld next. There are classes at the local community college. I'd also like to learn machining. Wouldn't it be great to have access to a good size CNC mill. "Billet Aluminum Head anyone?". That would be a huge project but, why not? They make them for MG's. Cross flow would be cool. 4 valve? Hemi???

I guess you guys ARE the "Local" group of friends. Thanks for being there.

Sounds like fun on the press project. Wish I could join you for some "in person" wrenching still. I don't have anyone here I can wrench with yet and that sucks.

My buddy Pete Mao in Westwood is always up for wrenching and you guys have a similar outlook...
