Before I swap out my 73' Dart 7.25 rear-end with an 8.25 from a 76' Scamp four speed car I compared the drive shaft front slip yoke of the Dart A-230 three speed (manual) transmission car to the Scamp drive shaft, only to find out they are different. The slip yoke on the Scamp drive shaft is longer and fatter than the Dart, so obviously I can't use that drive shaft to install the 8.25 in the Dart without modification. The Scamp donor car has the 8.25 rear-end and 833 O/D transmission. Both transmissions seem to be the same length and visually at least the u-joints in both drive shafts look the same, so would I be able to use the three speed/7.25 slip yoke on the four speed/8.25 drive shaft to install the 8.25? Thanks for the help.

PS- I plan to install the 833 O/D in the Dart later but for now I just want to do the 8.25 if possible.

Front slip yokes come in two families:

Small: A-904 Auto and A-230/903 three speed manuals
Large: A-833 and A-833 OD manual and A-727 auto trannies...

If you swap rears, use the drive line from the '76 and put your small 3 spd. yoke with a new U-joint on the '76 driveline.

When you install the A-833, you will pull the driveline again and use the bigger yoke that originally came with that tranny.

good luck on your swap, it's not hard, I just did the reverse of that 2 years back....It's an afternoon's worth of work with a buddy. Make sure to get a rear alignment when you're done to make sure you're tracking correctly.

Just to follow up please, I assume from your reply that the u-joints used for the two different drive shafts are the same, and that the total length of the 8.25/four-speed shaft (with the 7.25/three-speed shaft slip yoke installed) will work mated to the three speed manual Dart transmission. The same u-joint part # is listed for both cars, but I forgot to ask about the total length, since the skinnier slip yoke is also a bit shorter. Thanks again.

Yoda here would say "total length matters not....driveshaft length critical to making sure it stays in the right position...."

In this case your critical parts are:

1) making sure the u-joints are the same from driveshaft to drive shaft (some HD applications get the larger U-joint, so make sure you measure the joint and check them with your car...should be 2 1/8" across or so, and the HD ones are 2 5/8"? I think...)

2) making sure the driveshaft allows to yoke to slip out of the tranny no more than 1" max when everything is installed...longer yoke doesn't make any difference in the tranny. If you jack your car up, put jack stands under it and let the rear axle 'drop', look at your slip yoke and I'll bet you see 1/2-3/4" of 'clean yoke/wear' where the yoke commonly slides out during potholes, dips in the road, bumps, etc...

Just check to make sure the U-joints are correct and transfer your yoke and new rear-end, and get the tranny speedo gear from the donor car, and put it into your car, and you should be good to drive it...

I beg to differ...... The slip yoke from my 1975 A904 Auto tranny fits the A833 OD manual trans from any Volaré / Aspen. I know, I put the OD trans in my auto car and used the original drive shaft from the auto just as it was.

By the way... Does anyone know how to make the e with ' over the top of it ?? Like this... é é é é That's different than this e' e' e'

I've swapped loads of trannies. I did a swap in my stock 1975 Dart Sport and went to a 1976 slant and A-904 from an Aspen and didn't change the yoke since they both were small yokes. I have the drivelines out of a 1973 Charger, a 1975 Fury, and a 1974 Dart all A-904's all still have small yokes attached all the same length too...same as the one in my1974 A-230 equipped Duster.
I have the yokes from: a 1967 Newport, a 1973 Newport, a 1975 Cordoba, 1976 Duster(A-833OD),1978 Aspen(A-833OD) 1981 Ram(A-833OD) all are big yoke, length is longer on the truck and 'Boat' models and shorter on the A-body.

I'd like to see some pics and spline count of your A-904 mainshaft tail section.

I have seen the 833 4-speeds with the small and the large spline output shafts.
I never could figure out why Mopar did that. :?

Also, AFAIK all A500 and A518 OD autos have the larger 727 style output shaft.
