Starting to do more than head scratch on a higher compression engine...

Looking over the various builds, about how much compression can a head gasket take before you need to O-ring the block (let's disgard boost for sake of this topic).

The victor Reinz gasket is holding well in my current 11.7:1SCR motor, I know the Felpro gasket seems to be OK into the 10's but I had the head gasket give during break in on an 11:1 motor...(So I'm more of a fan for Victor and Aussie at this point if over 10:1)

I saw a topic where Romeo had used a .020 gasket for his 13.2:1 mill, but he didn't say it was a copper gasket or shim....

I know the Aussie gasket is well put together and I think it might hold up to the 12's.

Anyone know where the upper boundary is for using an over the counter head gasket?

THanks

I have run several different composite gaskets up to 11:1.

Tilley said the Permaseal was good to the 12s:1, and he usually uses an o-ring on one side that hits the fire right (head side, IIRC). I have one on the 11:1 motor in Project V. I think many of the TN guys have run composites to 12:1, even FelPro. Seymour uses Corteco and his motor is over 11:1.

I ran the steel shim coated with Hylamar(I'm sure I spelled that wrong) but after a few passes leaks started. A.040 Felpro permatorque replaced that wanting to lower the compression a bit along with a few other changes for longevity and have had no problems. Greg has a copper but I don't know if that is what he is running at the moment.

I have run Fel-Pro and Aussie/ Permaseal Big Bore on Ruster with 12.5:1 No issues with either :-)

I agree with everyone. If the surfaces are flat it will work. An o'ring just on the edge of the copper band will hold over 13 to 1.

Much appreciated for the input from the guys in the know. Seemed like a good question to ask before planning the 'next' step.
