Guys , heres my dilemma... I have a 84 dodge miser and I was thinking of buying headers for it. Does anyone make headers for my pick up? If not I'm think of rebuilding the exhaust system from the flange back..think glass packs!! I would keep the original exhaust for vehicle inspections, and then swap the performance system after inspection. I think a free flowing exhaust using factory manifolds and a single glass pack would help Ol Red get up and go. Any comments????

A single glass pack works great- as a resonator downstream from another muffler- something like a "super turbo" series from walker. Just the glasspack alone will be super loud at certain rpm's- I ran a similar "straight thru" system on a Dart & got a headache after 30 min on the highway from exhaust resonance noise.

Right near the top of the parts for sale section. Headers don't necessarily make your vehicle fail smog. Just depends on what they need to see, and where you are.

If I understand correctly, in TX you only have to worry about emissions inspection if the vehicle is less than 25 years old. Your '84 should be okay, but I'd ask whoever you plan to have inspect it first.

Just to keep things kosher, though, I'd run a high-flow cat.

Kind of surprised you need it tested in Midland...Don't need one for any year car here in Lubbock.

I take my vehicle to a Kent Kwik station. Some kid said he could not pass my truck because he thought the cat under the cab was a muffler. I then popped th hood and proudly displayed the cat located under the manifold. He sheepishly applied the sticker to the windshield, and said I didnt know those trucks had that!!!! Didn't bother to tell him i was running 2 cats and no muffler. I would like to pull th 3.21gears out and drop some3.91 for a little added zip, but that's another day. Hopefully ol'Red will be running in time to give my oldest a vehicle to drive soon.

Here either.. They dont even pay attention to it other than for exhaust leaks... Think its more where you take it tho....

Just yearly safety checks, but you knew that. Why would they care if any emmision stuff is on there? The last couple of times I've had my 5th done they never even looked under the hood. And its far from smog legal...

over 25 years old its NOT necessary, except for a few "hot spots" (Houston i think is one, but will confirm this on a different board) Because if you have antique plates the inspection sticker isnt even necessary... Altho you are really not supposed to use your "antique" as a daily I have never heard of any hassles here in Amarillo.... And antique plates can be had for anything over 25 and they are good for 5 years.

I don't think headers are going to do for you what you think they will.

Hey Dan, has anyone had experience with side pipes? Back in the day I ran a '59 Ford 1/2 ton pick up equipped with a 292 T bird engine and 4 speed, and NO mufflers, just 'pipes, and it sounded so COOOOL!! Does a /6 lend itself to 'pipes, if for just the sound??. I wanna buy some chrome slotted American mag wheels and black 'pipes just cuz it would look pretty cool.... This west Texas heat is getting to my brain, I guess!!!

Why not run stacks out the bed?

I call the Fartdart that because it has a full length exhaust and no muffler. When I bought it I pulled the rotted muffler, replaced it with flex pipe and goobed it up with black RTV.

I almost bought a 82 PU with a 4 speed and a slant with split straight pipes out under the bumper. It sounded sweet.

I think the interior resonance sound is a car thing.

Tailpipe(s) dumping out at the rear of the vehicle are way, way better than sidepipes or stacks. Why? Well, because I don't like being forced to choose either having all the windows closed or getting gassed half to death by my own truck in traffic.
