Hey guys,

I went to get my dutra duals and pipes installed at a local exhaust shop but they wouldn't let me go without Cats (I know it's the law but I know the guy and figured he'd let me slide [and $150 per Cat! I knew Summit would be cheaper]). Well anyway, I've read that the newer cats don't hurt exhaust flow like they used to, so I'm in the need of a Cat or some Cats.

My exhaust system was and still is going to be true duals (2") from the manifolds to the back. I was planning on running an X pipe as well.

I was hoping you guys could point me in the right direction of a good flowing cat or cats that won't melt down in a week. I don't need to pass any emissions test here in Florida.

My initial thought was to look into dual inlet dual outlet cats. Would be cheaper than buying two separate cats (except for the very cheapest). Can these cats be used to serve the purpose as an X pipe?

I've been looking at this one. I've got no clue as to what brands are good.

The converter you linked to looks fine, but if you are going to have a dual in/dual out catalytic you don't need a crossover.

Be aware that unless your carburetor is VERY well tuned and in VERY good shape no catalytic converter will last long. The only carbs that stand a chance of coexisting happily with a catalytic converter are computer controlled carbs.

Am I missing something, here? In Florida, you don't have any emissions tests to pass, but you're required to install cats?

Seems like a pointless requirement, but then, I don't have the mindset of a politician.

Actually it is against federal law to modify or install an exhaust system without cats, if they were on the car as original. The shop owner is covering his ass. Can't really blame him.
However there are more shops in Florida that don't comply with that law, then do. Check some other exhaust shops.

Thanks for clearing up the dual inlet/outlet Cat doing the same job as the cross over Reed. I'd heard that they get screwed up pretty easily. Figured if I can't get around them, I'd run them till they die (no chance of them clogging my mufflers, glasspacks) and then take hantayo13's advise.

hantayo13, I had actually planned on doing that. Heard you could take pipe, put a few holes in it and feed it through an empty cat and it becomes a resonator . Sadly, I don't want to buy a new OEM replacement just to punch it out and the local junkyards don't even have it listed as a part they have a price down for. They probably take every cat that comes through the door and recycle them. If I could get a hold of another that looks the same...

Charrlie_S, I'll swing by a few more places and ask around. Difficult because no one in their right minds would answer yes to "Can you do it without cats" over the phone. For all they know, I'm a cop. Have you ever heard of anyone getting a ticket/impounded for no cats in Florida?

It's not a matter of the owner of the car getting ticketed or the car impounded. It's a matter of the shop violating Federal law and getting spanked with very stiff fines.

Workaround: "Hi, I have a '74 Dodge Aspen that needs an exhaust system from the manifolds on back...when can I bring it in?".

Federal law trumps state laws like this; shops in MD are still subject to stiff fines if they remove a catalytic converter except for the purpose of replacing it with another.

Actually, there is. A few years back I installed a catco high-flow catalytic converter on my brother's 83 Dodge van. THe van was running a worn Carter BD at the time. Within several months the too-rich exhaust had caused the catalytic converter honeycomb to meltdown and blow apart. The honeycomb parts that blew out the back of the catalytic lodged in the muffler and clogged it.

I grew up in Alaska where there used to be similar attitudes- "no environmental problems because I can't see any." Low population, lots of clean-appearing air and water. By the time I was in my teens Anchorage, AK was having its first ever pollution inversions. Pollution is real and should be mitigated as much as possible. It might be a pain to keep the emissions systems on cars functioning, but your lungs, your neighbors' lungs, and your children's' lungs will be better off for it.

…for the same reason the air in American cities and towns is cleaner now than it was 30 years ago, despite more people driving more cars more distance: much, much better emission controls on newer cars—including catalytic converters—and many more newer cars than older cars.
