What do you all recommend for products and techniques to clean the guts and case of a transmission during a rebuild? I am starting yet ANOTHER tranny rebuild (but at least it isn't for my brothers van!) and want to get the guts good and clean.

Thanks!

an effective option maybe to contact a local auto tranny repair shop and see if they will clean your parts and bag em for you for a 'contract price'.

the right shop will have ultra sonic / pressure solvent baths / maybe even dry ice blasting that you will never be able to duplicate in a garage.

even if you find someone, I would still do extensive brissel brush probing / solvent flushing (brake cleaner ?) to verify everything is clean and open prior to re assembly.

Purple Power degreaser and a brush will do a good job on the case itself.

Thanks for the tips. I will probably clean the case itself with a pressure washer and I might take the internals to a trans shop and see what they would charge to clean them up.

If you have a VERY understanding and patient wife like I do, she might let you use the dish washer.

I did that with the last automatic I rebuilt. Cleaned the stuff up REAL nice. Run an extra rinse cycle if you are worried about detergent.

But, dish soap is excellent at cutting crud, and degreasing. I used a toothbrush and parts cleaner to get the stuff I could see first.

For the valve body,I would use kerosene or diesel fuel. I would never use a water-based cleaner because it could cause the valve body bores to corrode, and cause valve sticking. Also, if you take it apart yourself, be very carefull to label the springs, as several of them look very similar.

Dish soap I could swing, but I don't think my Mom and sisters would let me live if I put a transmission case in our near new dishwasher.

I think I will pressure wash the case and take the valve body to a shop.
