why not get a junk yard motor. you can prob get a low mileage motor for $100-200...its much cheaper than rebuilding your or buying a reman motor.

83Ram150Dude, I'd like to believe the MP remans are decent quality.

My experience is with cheap "factory" remans from autoparts stores and the like. The ones I've seen have been 50/50 good/bad. They're just poorly done. I'll admit, it's usually the end result of someone searching for the cheapest price; then having to deal with the results (got what you paid for).

If you just want to get the car on the road, a 3/36 warranty would be compelling. If you're looking to play with it, I'd build it yourself. It'd depend on what your goals are.
Actually the MP engines are new not reman. Mopar reman is a different program. I agree with you if you want to build something to play with, but like you said, if you just want to get it running again you can't beat a Mopar reman....its the real deal, not Uncle Cletus' spray bomb special...

Yes, reman slant 6 crate motors are still available from the dealer. How do I know? I work for the parts department for one....
Holy cow. Given the total annihilation of slant-6 support in the last couple of years, I never would have guessed that I could walk in and order an entire motor. As recently as 5 years ago, I could still order all sorts of parts through MP, but almost everything has been discontinued. No surprise, I guess.

What else is available from the factory, regarding slant-6 stuff?

- Erik
Performance parts from MP are getting slim for everything. They didn't even produce an '03 catalog! As far as the slant goes, cams are available still, as are oversize valves, and a few odds and ends. Otherwise your pretty much gonna have to go with the aftermarket. Oh yeah, the MP electronic ignition kit has been discontinued, so if you have a leanburn to convert, your gonna have to piece it together.

Finding a low mileage used motor is gonna be few and far between these days seeing the newest slant you might find would be an '87, unless you find a marine version, then it would be a '91. It is an option, but there is a reason the word junk is in junkyard. Good for a core engine and not much else most of the time. But its your money.....

good used motors are out there, you just have to beaware of what you are buying, do a compression test, pull the valve cover, inpect what ever you can.

i bought a complete 73 dart swinger oarts car with 70k original miles for $400, sold the motor, trans, radiator and electric ignition harness for $250. 2 years later and the guy is driving the car with the transplanted motor.

if anyone is local to LI NY and needs a running slant motor let me know, i come across them all the time, plus i have a friend who stock piles mopar parts and currently he has 6 slant cars in stock (3running)(3partsor restore)

I'd have to check it out again, but if memory serves me right I think they were somewhere between $12-1400 bucks for a longblock assembly. However they are 81-87 hydraulic lifter design, so not all of the tin may work for your particular application.
Interesting. My slant gave up about 9 years ago before I knew much of anything about engines. I looked for a new block at first because #1 cyl wall was worn .058 and #2-6 were all under .025. Ma told me the only block they could get was PRE-'81 (solid lifter), and the '81-87 blocks were discontinued. With my experience with the dealer up here, it would not surprise me if they just plain lied to me. I guess it could also be the fact that I live on top of the world and no-one wants to ship anything up here

To the original question, I would rebuild it myself for reasons already stated. I just rebuilt my slant, and the short block cost me about $800, which included the price of the master rebuild kit. (Remember that is an Alaska price, which are typically 25% to 50% higher than the lower 48 )
