All things being equal (though they never are - but for discussion) is it better to shave the head or the block to raise compression on a slant six? And WHY, please...

It is a lot easier to shave the head, but if you are doing a complete rebuild I believe it is better to cut the block.

Definately...if going complete rebuild I'd deck the block and do a minimum to the head, that way you have some room if you need to
install a stocker to lower the compression or can make a min. cut
to put the chamber volume where you need it for your build...

If going for all out race performance through raising compression, you'r going to freak the machinist out by taking a large cut off both surfaces...(my current performance head has .100 off it, and the block has about .120 out of it to bring me up to almost 12:1)
