Since I fixed my pedal issue on the 65 valiant the kick down seemed to change a bit. When I hit the throttle the pedal is almost to the floor before I feel the notch to kick it down.

Would I just adjust the down rod like you do gas pedal? Open throttle all the way and push down rod all the way and adjust? Or is it something else?

That sounds like the proper way to do it.

It's something else. Read the service manual.

I have always adjusted T F kickdowns full throttle, full kick down with no problems and good shifting

I have a 65 Dart with a recent super six conversion. The car runs great but when I push full throttle, the car tries to downshift but goes into a sluggish mode. I have confirmed that the lever on the transmission does go all the way back on full throttle. Before the conversion it worked great with the old linkage. The new downshift linkage had a longer arm on the transmission. I tried it but found I had clearance problems to the body so I went back to the shorter lever. Any suggestions.

Are you having a carburator issue, if you switched to a two barrel set up at the same time you changed linkage

I changed to the two bbl Holley and the car runs great. I believe the kickdown is adjusted right with the full throttle and the linkage arm all the way back. I am using the shorter arm with the new linkage. I'm thinking it may be time to take it to the transmission shop.

I was reading some of the older posts on the kickdown linkage. I have no idea what year car my linkage is off of but the shift lever was longer that my original one on my 65 Dart. I installed the longer lever and had clearance issues with the rod assembley at full throttle and went back to the shorter lever. Does the length of the lever have that much impact on the shifting even though the shiftng lever is all the way back on full throttle?

This might help. From the manual.

I'm curious about the interference you had with the longer lever. Try going through the procedure and see if it goes away. Are you sure the lever was properly installed on the shaft?

Thanks for the response Ragtop. The linkage you show is identical to what I had in the car prior to the super six conversion. I now have a solid rod with a square slider and a 1/2 bolt in the side to secure the rod. The bolt head was hitting the body sheet metal and would not allow full travel. As far as mounting the lever on the transmission, it only goes on one way with the D shaped opening. Using the shorter original lever, I can get full throttle positioning.
If I'm told that I need the longer lever, I may try an allen screw to secure the rod. Jacking up the car and crawling under is a real pain in the Dart.

I would think the shorter link would make the normal shift points come on quicker with the link adjusted to full rear at full throttle.

You're welcome, krosan. Are you sure that the lever was all the way down on the transmission shaft?? It's possible to tighten the pinch bolt with the lever riding high on the shaft. Then it looks and feels right, but is slightly cockeyed. Without being under the car with decent light and sight of those parts, I have made that mistake.

I'm a big guy, and getting under my Darts IS tough, but there's only so much I can do by feel. Ramps, jackstands, wheel chocks and asking a friend for help can make difficult tasks much easier. Another thing that I have found out from painful and/or embarrassing experience it that sometimes the folks who wrote out the procedures in the Factory Service Manuals, working alongside the folks who designed and built the assemblies I've been working on have figured out adjustment methods that work better than my best guesswork. Not to belabor the point, but have you tried the 3/8" rod through the holes in the bellcrank bracket and lever shown at # 7 in the drawing?

Good luck, and please report back I've got a /6 Dart I'll need to check & maybe adjust myself. These multi link kickdowns are exercises in geometry, and changing one part can have unforseen consequences

Ragtop, my linkage is the supersix linkage as shown in the FAQ's under Super Six. It is a one piece rod with the only adjustent at the setting block at the shifter arm. I am setting the shifter arm in the full back at full throttleThe shifter is mounted square on the transmission rod. My question is should the lever match the linkage or the transmission? I'll modify the square retainer block tomorrow by using set screws to get my clearances I need. If I could figure out how to post pictures I could just show you all.

With all my tinkering down there the speedometer cable has sprung a leak now. It's just a shame that I enjoy these challenges. I restored the car over the last two years and have learned a lot from folks on this forum along the way.

Krosan, it IS good to enjoy the challenges, our old MOPARS offer plenty of 'em. I haven't seen a super six kickdown, so I've nothing to offer except best wishes. (dunno where I got the idea you had the three piece linkage...)

I've got intake/carb mods in the planning stage and already bought a Bouchillon cable setup. Other fish to fry just now..

I had a similar issue with my 1965 transmission but I'm still using the original kickdown linkage. After backing off slightly on the throttle adjustment (to the TV lever), the transmission now kicks down properly.
